Harriett Educators of the Month The New Bern-Craven County Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the New Bern-Craven County Board of Education spotlights “Educators of the Month” for December 1983. Mr. Linwood I. Swain, Science Teacher at New Bern High School and Mrs. Linda H. Harriett, Media Specialist at Fort Barnwell Elementary School. Mr. Swain resides at 5112 White Oak Drive, New Bern, N.C. He grew up in Washington, N.C., graduating from Washington High School. He received his BS Degree from the University of North ' Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C„ and his Masters Degree from Duke University at Durham, N.C. In 1970 Linwood was honored by receiving the North Carolina Outstanding Biology Teacher Award, presented with this Award was a $4,000.00 microscope, he was also runner up for the National Outstanding Biology Teacher Award. In 1971 Linwood was chosen as “Outstanding Young Educator” by the New Bern Jaycees. He attends Centenary United Methodist Cburch and tries to spend each summer on the Outer Banks, his latest hobby is computers. Mrs. Harriett resides at Route 2, Box 54-E, New Bern, N.C. with her husband. Mrs. Harriett grew up in Jones County, graduated from Jones Central High School, received her BS Degree in Social Studies from Meredith College, Raleigh, N.C. and her Masters Degree in Library Science from East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. She serves as building representative for the North Carolina Association of Educators, is a member of Rhems United Methodist Church and a Bible School Teacher. Her hobbies are crafts and reading. Cannon, Jr, publisher of the HigMighU, awards Jimmy Huff with the $100 Grand Prize Check. •' Mr. & Mrs. Levi Anderson A Christmas Party with all the trimmings was the order of the day for Mr. & Mrs. Levi Anderson of Rt. 3, Vanceboro, last Friday night at the home of their son, Jackie Anderson. “The children wanted to do something extra special for our parents since they had been extremely sick during the year so we got together for a good old timey Christmas party with all the trimmings,” said Jackie Anderson. Mr. & Mrs. Anderson have lived in the Vanceboro area all their life. They have made their livelihood from farming, tobacco, corn, and beans. They have reared ten children, five girls and five boys. They are: Judy Morris, Janis Riggs, Janie Howard, Jeanette Elsworth, Alice Faye Jerry, Loyd Wiggins, Snoky Wiggins, Calvin Anderson, Johnny Ray Anderson, and Jackie Anderson. The Andersons have sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Anderson stated that she and Mr. Anderson thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas party and are looking forward to next year’s party. There were over fifty people in attendance. Home Destroyed The home of Mr. Leslie Pelham of Route 3, Vanceboro was completely destroyed by fire Sunday morning, December 26, making a very sad Christmas day for him and his family. The home caught fire from a flue entrance to the chimney according to bystanders. Everything in the home was destroyed including clothing, furniture, and appliances.
