The Index registered 123.6, up 1.2 percent from the revised figure for October. The rise in the Index resulted from increases in new business starts, new car sales and building permits. Total non-agricultural employment was virtually unchanged from the previous month, and initial claims for unemployment insurance increased after declining for eight consecutive months. November employment figures showed very little change from those reported for October. Manufacturing employment was down slightly as declines in some non-durable goods industries offset small increases in furniture and other durable goods industries. Non-manufacturing employment was up slightly reflecting gains in trade and contract construction. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for North Carolina was 8.4 percent in November, up 0.1 percentage points from the October level. The national rate for November was also 8.4 percent, down 0.4 percentage points from October. The unadjusted unemployment rate in North Carolina was 7.8 percent in November. The Wachovia North Carolina Business Index measures the level of economic activity in North Carolina on a monthly basis. Using 1976 as a base of 100, it reflects indicators of employment, business expansion, production and construction activity in the state’s economy. All data are seasonally adjusted for historic seasonal trends and are adjusted to smooth statistical aberrations. PERSPECTIVE National Society of Public Accountants 1010 N, Fairfax St.. Alexandria. SVBSCRIBE TO The Highlights A.— Yes, indeed you are. However, you are permitted to deduct any costs you incur and pay for the service. You may deduct meal costs, toys, substitute sitters, repairs to your home in the specific area where the children are housed, plus a portion of real estate taxes, insurance and utilities and phone in deter mining your net profit sub ject to the self employment tax. I would suggest you see a qualified tax preparer for this type of complicated return. Q.— I am a homemaker with a small business in my home. I receive cash for the service I render. I question whether my husband reports all of the income from this service since he handles all of our financial affairs in cluding our income"^ tax return. When he brings it home after having it prepared by a professional person he insists I simply sign the return without examin ing it. In fact he forces me to do so. If he is not reporting all of the income on this return can I be held liable for the tax should the return be audited and the discovery made that all of the income was not reported? A.— Yes, you are liable for everything that appears on your income tax return. However, the Congress recognizes that situations like this exist and they are working on a Bill at present that would free you from liability for the .signing of an income tax return containing information of which you had no knowledge.
