m SPORTS Jones Back to Form Bouncing back from their first defeat of the season, Jones Senior destroyed White Oak 93-7Y. Undefeated Jacksonville gave Jones their first defeat 67-66 in the opening round of the White Oak Invitational Christmas Tournament. Jones now 7-1 will return home for a Coastal Plain 2-A Conference match up with Topsail. New Bern Loses To Jacksonville After beating White Oak handily in the first game of the White Oak Invitational Christmas Tournament, New Bern found themselves stunned by a strong Jacksonville team. Jacksonville gave Jones Senior their first defeat in their first game of the tournament to get to the finals with New Bern. New Bern had three of their starters in foul trouble and Jacksonville took advantage of the Bears unaggressiveness to win 77-67. West Craven Splits Two In Tournament Mattamuskeet kept its winning streak alive by defeating West Craven in the Washington Daily News Invitational Tournament. The Lakers came from 11 points down to take home a 69-67 victory stretching their winning streak to 31 in regular season games. In the consolation game. West Craven also blew a 7 point lead but were able to pull through on a free throw by top Eagle scorer, Reggie Goodman. Goodman finished the game with 22. Tim Cox, who had 26 points in the first game, led the Eagles in the Tournament with 36 total points. The Eagles are now 3-4 going into conference play. On January 6, 1984 the Eagles will host conference rival Havelock. SCHOOL NEWS New Bern-Craven County School Board Highlights IH SCHOOL MENUS Civitan of the Year-Mr. Calvin Stokes, principal of the Trent Park Elementary School, has been nam^ “Civitan of the Year” by the New Bern Civitan Club. Mr. Stokes, the immediate past president of the club, has played an active role in Civitan activities for several years. We are proud of his involvement in civic affairs and his many contributions to the community. Congratu lations Mr. Stokes! Facilities-The proposal of the Craven County Board of Commissioners was accepted relative to the acquisition of the Board of Education’s property located on the corner of Craven and Broad Streets, with the understanding that the Board of Education further agreed that the Commissioners could proceed immediately with the development of that part of the property that is presently used for parking if suitable parking arrangements could be made for supplemental parking. New Elementary School For Havelock- Based upon recommen dation of the Facilities Committee and the superintendent, the Board passed a motion requesting a supple mental appropriation of $600,000 to this year’s Capital Outlay Budget and also requesting the Commissioners to com mit $1,000,000 for each of the next two fiscal years to be used to construct a new elementary school in Havelock.
