Above picture was taken on the Miller farm in Willis Neck. H.U.G. Volunteers Recognized West Craven High School, West Craven Middle School, Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School, Jasper Elementary School, and Fort Barnwell Elementary School will hold an area recognition for the H.U.G. volunteers at the E.P. Blair Auditorium at Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary School on May 1st at 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Carolyn Hunt, wife of governor James B. Hunt, will be the guest speaker for the occasion. Mrs. Hunt is an active H.U.G. volunteer in the Wake County Schools. Entertainment will be provided by students from the Farm Life School. All H.U.G. volunteers will be recognized and special awards will be presented to those who have given 100 hours or more to the school during the 1983-84 school year. All school volunteers for these five schools, their families, and the teachers of these schools are invited to attend. Volunteer Carolina Women Helping Women The Craven County Council on Women will sponsor the first eastern North Carolina Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament May 17, 1984 at Fairfield Harbour. This unique charity tournament will help support the council’s domestic violence and sexual assault education and service projects. Tee time for the tournament is 10 a.m. A luncheon and f i^ards presentation with a Sshion show by Eve’s Leaves of New Bern will be held at 2:30 p.m. CCCW currently operates a 24-hour crisis line for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, provides emergency room companies, court advocates and provides community education on sexual assault, domestic violence and other issues of importance to women and their families. “Women Helping Women” golf participants will literally be golfing for women. All proceeds raised from the tournament will go directly toward council programs. Women interested in partici pating should contact their golf pro at their local golf and country club. Balloon Falls in Vanceboro After a lofty travel from Pleasant Grove. Route 3, Box 189 Burlington, N.C., a balloon that was launched by Donta Booker arrived in Vanceboro about 4:00 p.m. on April 12. The balloon had been released in Burlington on April 11. Denise Fillingame saw the balloon as it came in for its landing in a field across from her home on 1st Avenue in Vanceboro. She managed to retrieve it intact. She is planning to contact the launcher and report her finding to this newspaper. The balloon launch has been done around the state to draw attention and celebrate N.C. School Libraries Media Day. The balloons were furnished by McDonald’s.
