Chlorine Gas Scare A chlorine gas leak or fumes set off the alarm this week at the local Roberk Plant in Vanceboro. Quick action by the Vanceboro Fire Department under the direction of Fire Chief Stanley Kite and Vanceboro Police Chief Billy Jewell sealed off the area and made preparations for evacuation of the area. Chief Kite and a volunteer fireman went on the scene with air packs to investigate the leak. Valves were secured and tests were made to determine if the leak had been secured. After approximately three hours of testing, the area was open to traffic and activity of the community was back to normal. State Highway Patrol, Craven County Sheriffs deputies, and other county agencies were on the scene aiding with traffic control and sealing off of the area. A company spokesman stated that that cause of the alarm was probably due to the trapping of fumes from plant operations when doors were closed at shut down time. The alarm is set on a very sensitive setting in order to detect any possible danger according to the spokesman. The company meets all safety requirements issued for handling this type of gas. The chlorine gas is used in the plant for curing the rubber used in manufacturing wiper blades. The company wishes to thank the Vanceboro Fire Department for their quick response to the alarm and the assistance they gave during the incident. The funds were included in the Fiscal Year 1985 Authorization bill for the U.S. Coast Guard , the agency charged with altering or removing bridges over navigable waters. Congress man Jones, chairman of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee which has jurisdiction over the Coast Guard, sponsored this legislation, H.R. 4841. “The Trent River Bridge posed no problems for local navigation for almost one hundred years.
