Page 8, West Craven Highlights, May 3, 1984 FARMING NEWS griev'd Emergency Flood Protection The USDA Soil Conserva tion Service (SCS) has received $260,000 to make emergency repairs to streams that pose a potential flood hazard in those counties devastated by the recent tornadoes. Many streams are blocked by timbers that fell during the tornadoes, reports Dick Gallo, Assistant State Conserva tionist, SCS. These blockages can cause flooding in areas that are not normally affected by floods creating the potential for another natural disaster. Of the 14 counties that are involved, Robeson, Cumber land, Sampson, and Pitt have known significant stream blockage problems at this time. Gallo said. Mitchell departed for New York City on April 20th to spend some time with family and friends for awhile. She has planned to sight see and visit some historical places while in the city. Henderson and son Collin of Durham, N.C. were at home Easter weekend with the parents of Mrs. Henderson. Mr. & Mrs. Dal Mitchell were very pleased to have them hom^ to share their Easter blessings. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ « Mrs. Bertha Brooks and daughter Cynthia were happy to have their cousins home for a week on Easter vacation. The cousins from New York were Mrs. Ethelene Williams, Mrs. Mary Fields, and Mrs. Clemmie Jackson also Mrs. Nettie White Fredericks of New London, Connecticut. They visited many relatives and friends while in the Ft. Barnwell area. On April 26, 1984 Mr. and Mrs. Dal W. Mitchell had as their dinner guests, Mrs. Fredericks of Connecticut, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Fields and Mrs. Williams of New York, also Mrs. Eva Hawkins of Kinston, N;C. Everyone enjoyed dinner and also sharing experiences of the past and the present. The two families (Whites and Hawkins) have known each other for a long time. Mrs. Fredericks read the news in the Highlights while &thome and became a new subscriber. She enjoys news from Eastern, North Carolina or down home. ♦ ♦ ♦ Mrs. Bessie Bryant Seels of Brooklyn, New York was the guest of Ms. Queenie Blount and family during the Easter holidays. She visited other relatives and friends while at home also. Mini-Workshop on Pierced Tin completed within two months. The work does not apply to on- farm blockages or those thatdo not pose a flood damage threat. The $250,000 is allocated through the Emergency Watershed Protection Act, Sec. 216, PL 81-516. The local government unit which normally has responsibility for stream and'channel mainte nance will contribute 20 percent of the clean-up costs. The debris removal operations are being coordi nated through the Disaster Assistance Headquarters. Streams in the disaster area needing clearing should be reported to the nearest Disaster Assistance Center or Soil Conservation Service office, Gallo said. Join in the revival of old- fashion pierced tin craftwork. The Craven County Extension Service will conduct a mini workshop on pierced tin during Learn ‘n’ lunch on Wednesday, May 16, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Extension Office, 509 Broad Street in New Bern. Participants will work a country-style design on a pie tin. Contact Miss Susan Noble, Home Economics Extension Agent, by calling 633-1478 for details on cost and supplies.
