Whitford House Burns
FIRE DEMOLISHES-John
Whitford, Jr., home was
demolished late last Thursday
evening when it was complete-
ly gutted by fire. Three fire
fighting departments were
called to the scene, Vaneeboro
Volunteer Fire Dept.;
Epworth Sub-Station and
Askin Fire Department. Cause
of the blaze has not been
determined.

Joe Sizemore
West Craven Band Director
Takes New Job
After eight successful years as band director for West Craven
High School, Mr. Joe Sizemore will be moving to a new job. He
will start work as Director of Human Resources in Education
sponsored by a non-profit organization Medical Review of North
Carolina. This organization is funded by physicians and its job is
to monitor health care in North Carolina.
Sizemore will be in charge of staff development and physician
consumer and hospital education. He will provide materials,
schedule meetings, and participate in training physicians to
apply for federal grant money.
During the eight years at WCHS, Sizemore has made many
impressive accomplishments. Some of them are listed below -
hours of practice over 7,200; number of performances over 175
(40 hours practice for each performance); number of people
to see and hear the “Marching Eagles”, approximately 750,000;
awards won included 32 first places, 31 superior awards; total
trophies received 75; 17 all state members; 58 student awards
from the United States National Band Association.
He reports that it has been a most enjoyable and rewarding
eight years.
The Blair Auditorium at Vaneeboro Farm Life Elementary
School was the scene of the yearly Volunteer Recognition
Ceremony. Mrs. James B. Hunt was on hand to speak to the
assembled group and present the awards.
In her remarks, Mrs. Hunt stated the reward of volunteer
• 'k is “the delight in a child’s eyes and their discovery of their
lity to stay in school.” Mrs. Hunt is the mother of four children
and she understands the feelings of children who need help in
their studies. She stated there are three components that must be
recognized in education, they are home, school, and community.
She also stated “one gets by giving.”
Those participating in the awards ceremony were Mr. Richard
Bowers, principal, Vaneeboro Farm Life Elementary School;
Dr. Ben Quinn, Superintendent, New Bern-Craven County
School; Mr. James W. Smith, Chairman, New Bern-Craven
County Board of Education, Mrs. Linda thomas. Coordinator;
and Janet Furman, System Volunteer Coordinator.
