Number 20, 12 Pages 20 Cents Vanceboro, North Carolina Phone 244-0780 May 17 - 23, 1984 50th Reunion at Farm Life Alumni Banquet Tryon Palace Events Tryon Palace will be the historic setting for the sixth annual Colonial Living Day on May 26th, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The *^||Meunds and gardens are open free to the public on this special and over thirty-five regional craftsmen will demonstrate their skills on the exterior of the colonial capitol and governor’s mansion. Crafts run the gamut from tinsmithing and gun making to spinning and weaving, basket making, and candlemaking: a wealth of skills necessary to the operation of North Carolina’s grandest 18th century household. A highlight of Colonial Living Day will be the activities of the Guilford Militia under the direction of Robert Shively. The Guilford Militia, organized four years ago by two muzzle loading clubs in Alamance County, will set up an encampment complete with a regimental surgeon. Their program will include military drills and musket demonstrations throughout Colonial Living Day. 'The fourth season of the Tryon Palace Drama Tours, Kermit Hunter’s “The Rising Splendor”, will premiere on Memorial Day l^nday. Twelve actors, portraying colorful character from the »ly days of Tryon Palace, informatively entertain visitors as t^y pass through the rooms of the Palace. (Contiuimi on imgv 10) Orringer Elected Mrs. Kathleen Orringer, member of the Craven Community College Board of Trustees, was elected vice- president of the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees at their annual meeting which was held May 1-2 at Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C. Other trustees from the College who attended the meeting were Mr. Roger Bell, Mr. Charles Denham, Mr. Sidney French, Mr. James Gavin, Mr. Gray Lancaster, Mr. Doug Nelson, and Mrs. Lauretta Smith. Dr. Thurman Brock, President of CCC, also attended the meeting. Wiggins McRoy, Venola Toler Gaskins, Addie It’s that time of year again for Vanceboro’s second annual Strawberry Festival. This year the Rescue Squad is including its big day of fun and food during the Festival to make for an even more exciting week-end. Festivities will begin on Thursday night with the West Craven High School Band and Choir Concert at 7:30 in the Blair Auditorium. A softball tournament will begin Friday night and go through the week-end at the Farm Life field. Saturday will be packed with activities so plan to come and spend the day. Beginning at 10:00 a parade, craft extravaganza, aware fair, bazaars, baked goods, souvenirs, pie contest, strawberry wagons, and a new car show located all along Main Street will kick off the big day. Barbecue pork and chicken dinners can be purchased from the Fire House for $3.00 and be sure to stay around for the Bluegrass performance, games, clogging exhibition, and gospel singing. Take a stroll over to the dedication of the Vanceboro Town Park at 1:30. Representatives from Weyerhaeuser and the Town Board will be participating. A story hour will be held at the library beginning at 3:00 for all young people and then come join the laughs at the Womanless Beauty Pageant at 7:00 at Blair Auditorium. “Rebel Yell” will be providing the music for a dance from 9-1 at Farm Life gym. Sunday will see the Council on Aging Building (old town hall) ribbon cutting and refreshments with local officials participating in the ceremony at 3:00. Around the corner you can enjoy clogging and observe a rescue simulation. Groups sponsoring events during the week-end include Rescue Squad 15, Vanceboro Junior Woman’s Club, West Craven High School Band and Choir, local churches. Eastern Star; Rotary, Highlights, West Craven High School Clubs, Carolina doggers. Swift Creek doggers, 55’ers, area softball teams, and a host of strawberry growers and craftsman from all around. Be sure to be a part of all the plans which have been made for your enjoyment and support the participating groups. See local businesses for pamphlets (and this edition of the Highlights) of the schedule of events. Many people have spent much time and energy into making this the best Strawberry Festival/Rescue Day by being there! Becky Hughes Strawberry Yard Sales This is a great opportunity for you ladies of Vanceboro, and surrounding areas to do your spring cleaning. Spruce- up! Clean-Up! your closets etc. and have a yard sale at the Strawberry Festival on May 19th. For a small registration fee of $10.00, you can take advantage of the people coming in and out of town on Rescue Squad/Strawberry Festival day. Do yourself a favor and help your town, with its publicity campaign by calling Becky Hughes at 244- 0291 for information. Each one who registers as an entry for this day will be issued a tag in the form of a strawberry to wear so that they may be recognized as having register ed for the booths or yard sales.
