- Page 6, West Craven Highlights, July 19, 1984 SCHOOL NEWS “FFA...VIP’s For Agriculture” was the theme of the twenty- first Annuai State FFA Leadership Conference heid Juiy 2-6 at R.J. Peeler FFA Camp, White Lake, NC. Attending the conference from West Craven were 1984-85 FFA officers Johnny Pate, Jay Gaskins, and Ira Whitford. Also at the conference from West Craven was Lee Kirkman, who is currentiy serving as president of the North Carolina FFA Association. The primary aim of the 1984 leadership conference was to establish vision, initiative,: and persistence in FFA ieaders. Daily sessions were ied by former state officers in areas dealing with FFA programs at ail levels, self-improvement of personal skills, and FFA involvement after graduation from high school. Evening sessions were led by current National Vice-President Rhonda Schuller on leadership tactics and communication skills. Approximately 300 FFA members, advisors, and guests attended this year’s con ference. Accompanying the West Craven officers was FFA Advisor Henry Pasour. After School Programs The New Bern-Craven County YMCA is presently conducting a survey of parents interested in an after-school program for this fall. The programs would be for youngsters ages 6-13 years of age. The program would be conducted from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and on school holidays. Activities such as arts and crafts, sports, field trips, quiet games and other YMCA programs will be offered. Youths ages 14-16 can volunteer as aids in the program if interested. Wachovia’s ^ Net Income^ Increases The Wachovia Corporation's net income per share for the second quarter of 1984 was $1.47, an increase of 15.8 percent over the $1.27 earned in the same period last year. This amounted to $23,737 million compared with $20,402 million a year earlier, according to John G. Medlin Jr., chief executive officer. For the first six months, net income was $2.98 per share, a 12.3 percent increase over tl^|||^ $2.65 in the prior year half. ThiP^ represented $48,070 million compared with $42,614 million earned in 1983. Income before securities transactions were $1.55 per share, up 14 percent from the second three months of 1983. For the first half, it totaled $3.12 per share, up 13.6 percent over a year ago. This was equivalent to $25,123 million for the quarter and $50,415 million for the half. Medlin said higher levels of commercial and consumer loans, net interest income and other operating revenues were primarily responsible for the strong performance in both periods. Average loans were up $712 million or 19.8 percent for the quarter and $551 million or 15.5 percent for the half over 1983 levels.
