One new group of services becoming popular among telephone users is Custom Calling Features, which are available from your local telephone company in areas served by digital central offices. A few years ago, you missed your phone calls if you were away from your home or business—unless you were hooked into an answering service or machine. Today, with Custom Calling Features, you can have your phone calls follow you wherever you This feature, termed Call Forwarding, will allow you to transfer your incoming calls to another number of your choice. For example, if you’re expecting an important phone call at home but need to go to your neighbor’s house, you can forward your calls to your neighbor’s phone. You can still make outgoing phone calls after you forward your calls. Call Forwarding may be a good security measure when you’re away from home. Another feature. Call Waiting, will let you know that someone is trying to call you if you’re already using the phone. A short beep will alert you of the incoming call. You may then put the first caller on hold to catch your second call. If you want to have a simultaneous conversation with people on two other phone lines, Three-Way Calling is available. With this feature, you could talk to your brother in Raleigh and your sister in Rocky Mount in the same conversation. With Speed Calling, you can call frequently-dialed numbers and emergency numbers just by dialing a one-digit or two-digit number. For example, if you’re active in a club and call the members Several times a week, you could program each member’s number into the phone and save yourself a lot of dialing. Speed Calling is available for eight numbers or 30 numbers. You pay for Custom Calling Features on a monthly basis and can cancel them at any time. You can purchase features separately or in packages of three. You get a discount from the phone company when you buy the features in packages. Prices per feature start at about $1.25 a month, depending upon the feature you choose. Because Custom Calling Features are only available in areas with digital telephone switching eqiupment, you should check with your local telephone office to determine availability. There are alternatives to Custom Calling Features, such as answering machines and automatic dialers, which you can purchase from a number of electronics and telephone stores. It’s a good idea ot shop around to determine what’s the best buy for your needs.
