Page 6, West Craven Highlights, October 4, 1984 HIGHLIGHTS By DONNIE PRINCE WC Whips Farmville 28-16 West Craven traveled to Farmville Central Friday night in search of their fifth victory and they made it clear early on that they intended to get it. On the Eagles first play from scrimmage, senior quarter back Randy Elks found sophomore standout Jessie Campbell deep in the Jaguar secondary for a 75 yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. A lead they would never give up. The ^gles added to that cushion in the second period. Facing a third down and 35 from their five yard line, the gutsy Elks dropped into his own end zone and fired a 36 yard pass to Campbell at the West Craven 41. Seven plays later sophomore fullback Ladaryl Nobles dove over from two yards out. All of the West Craven backs benefited from the five performance of the offensive line made up of senior Paul Edwards and juniors Ferrill Hardy, Anthony Arrington, Jay Milierand Chris Wells. The Eagles came out in the second half and scored on their first possession. The big play of the drive coming on a fourth down fake punt from their own 48 yard line. Nobles rambling 12 yards for the first down. Eagles coach Clay Jordan after the game explained, "We had scouted their punt return formation on film. We saw a hole and took advantage of it. Jordan’s call kept the drive alive that gave West Craven a 21 -0 lead, for all intentions and purpose this game was over.” West Craven's defense was again sensationai. Junior Morris Jones led a swarming bunch of Eagles that had held the opposition scoreless for 12 quarters. The Jaguars broke that string on a one yard run by running back Jeff Vail. West Craven quickly answered the Farmville score with one of their own. The big play a 30- yard scamper by junior halfback Mickey Rasberry. The drive was capped off with Campbell going over from 1 yard out for his second touchdown of the night. Farmville added another token touchdown to make the final score 28-16, but it wasn’t that close. The Eagles were in command from the beginning in what Jordan cailed, “our best overall performance of the season. I am very pleased.” And well he should be. His Eagles are 5-0 and counting. West Craven’s next game is at home in two weeks against conference opponent North Lenoir. Score by quarters: WC - 7,6, 8, 7 - 28; Farmville - 0, 0,8, 8 - 16. West Craven Player of the Week - Campbell Jessie Campbell made his presence known early against Farmvilie Centrai when on West Craven’s first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Randy Elks found a streaking Campbell for a 75 yard touchdown strike. From that point on the Eagles never looked back on their way to their fifth victory of the year, a 28-16 win over highly touted Farmville Central. Campbell, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Campbell, Sr., Route 2, Box 522, Vanceboro, is a starter on both offense and defense. The 6'7'’ - 190 ib. sophomore is equaiiy skilled on both sides of the football. Defensively Campbell plays a very aggressive outside iinebacker position. On offense the taiented Campbell lines up as the right haifback in West Craven’s wishbone offense. In passing situations the Eagles will break the wishbone moving Campbeil to a wide receiver. As a receiver, Campbell is especiaiiy dangerous. His height excellent speed and leaping ability make him a big target to throw to. Against Farmville Campbeil scored two touchdowns, catching thred passes for 140 yards and rushing for 68 yards on eight carries. Jessie Campbell, West Craven’s Player of the Week. QUESTIONS 1. State Stop^ Two teams desperately in need of a win met in Carter- Finley Stadium Saturday night before 57,200 screaming fans as N.C. State’s coach Tom Reed recorded the biggest win of his coaching career. Said Reed "It was a great win for us, because both teams were really wired for this game. It was a Heckuva game.” Anyone who was fortunate enough to see it would agree with that. The setting was perfect. Two interstate rivals squared under threatening skies on ir cold late September night as the two teams made it clear from the beginning that this would be a hard fought emotional contest.
