General Mead outlined in an informative and most interesting
talk to a large gathering of Vanceboro Rotarians, Rotary Anns,
■ feh^ateand Craven County elected officials and other community
leaders from Western Craven County, the mission and high state
of combat readiness of the Marine Corps and the structure and
mission of the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, with its
economic and social Impact on Craven Counfy and Eastern
North Carolina.
.Our speaker, a seasoned combat veteran with 29 years of
distinguished military service in the United States Marine Corps
served two combat tours in Vietnam and twice served with the
peach Keeping Forces in Lebanon.
As the cornmanding officer of the 32nd Marine Amphibious
Unit (MAV) during the period of August to October 1932, General
Mead led his unit into Lebanon as Commander United States
Force ashore the U.S. Contingent of the Multi-National Force,
which was ordered into Lebanon to assist the Lebanese
Government as a peacekeeping force. Later, in early 1983 the
General was assigned as commanding officer of the 22nd MAV
which returned to Lebanon as Landing Force Sixth Fleet. While in
this assignment, he was selected, in February 183 for promotion
to Brigadier General. His personal decorations and awards
include the Silver Star Medal Legion of Merit, the Distinguished
Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" plus fifteen
other combat and service medals.
General and Mrs. Mead have four children, 1st Lt. Matthew J.
Mead, USMCR, 1st Lt. Michael 0. Mead, USMCR, Mrs. Melanie
Mead Regan and Mitzi I. Mead.
Giving as an example of the exceptionally high quality of the
present day Marines, which contribute much to the Marine Corps
high state of combat readiness. General Mead pointed out that
98% of all enlisted marines were high school graduates and the
other 2% were men and women with extra ordinary talents who
did not graduate from high school on schedule due to unusual
circumstances. With this caliber of marine recruits he said we are
irting out with young people who are already successful - they

This driver has done an
outstanding job of two years.

gets along well with her fellow
drivers, maintains good order

rules, policies, and regulations
of the system. Along with these
guidelines, she maintains
proper care of the bus, and has
a good safety record.
Jarwarn is active in her
community and school. She
belongs to the Bus Drivers
Club and DECA club. She is
active in the athletic program
at West Craven. She has played
basketball for several years
and has received the honorff-of:
All Conference Player, Mbirt*
Outstanding, and Most
Valuable Player for her efforts.
Jarwarn is an excellent
selection, and the bus drivers
club would like to congratulate
her for the job she has done.

College Foundation. Dixie Lee Jarman Executive Director,
Craven Community College Foundation, received cash gifts at an
informal gathering at the Roberk Plant in Vanceboro, Monday
morning, March 17, to be used by the Craven County Public Non-
Profit Organizations they represented.
After the presentation Mr. Ron Lovett, plant manager,^ated
that the construction for the new addition should begin the
second week in April and at that time Roberk plans an official
ground breaking ceremony with Vanceboro and Craven County
officials, members of the County Industrial Commission, area
business and community leaders, citizens from throughout
Craven County and Roberk/Parker Hannifin officials being
invited to attend. Media from Eastern N.C. will be encouraged
to attend also as Mr. Lovett said," t his is a big event. We plan to
keep growing in this area, we are planning on being here
tomorrow and twenty five years from now."

Plans are underway for this
year’s Strawberry Festival-
Rescue Day Saturday, May 10.
The festival planning commit
tee has already begun plans to
make this year’s festival our
best ever. Cohnie Bryan is in
charge of the local groups
section. There is a form in this
week's Highlights, which can
be filied out and mailed to her.
She encourages all groups in
the Vanceboro area to
participate in the day’s event.
She stated, "This is an

everyone to come together and
celebrate the things that make
our town so Local
groups can raise sorha extra
funds,while they also help the
Rescue Squad.
Again this year, the
Vanceboro Junior Woman’s
Club will be sponsoring an
individual Crafts Fair. Persons
interested in this should also
contact .Connie Bryant or use

that they are not a local group.
