District Congressman Waiter
B. Jones—inciuding the
dredging of Oregon Inlet-
have been approved by the
U.S. House of Representatives.
The projects were included
in the Energy and Water
Development Appropriations
bill for fiscal year 1987, H.R.
5162, which passed the House
last week.
The funding for Oregon Inlet
totals $5,688,000 for mainte
nance dredging of the channel.
"Treacherous conditions
^ continue to exist at Oregon
‘ Inlet and continue to plague
fishermen and all others who
must use this channel. This
dredging money will allow the
Inlet to be kept open until a
^permanent stabilization of the
; Inlet is achieved," stated
Congressman Jones.
In 1984, the House of
Representatives approved
Congressman Jones' legisla
tion permittingthe Army Corps
of Engineers to construct the
jetties necessary for Oregon
Inlet stabilization, but
opponents have since blocked
its approval in the Senate.
Also included in the funding
legislation is $250,000 for the
Corp of Engineers to begin a
water quality and hydrology
study in the Albemarle/Pamli
co estuary.
"At my urging, the
Environmental Protection
Agency in April of this year
designated the Albemarle/
Pamlico Sounds as an estuary
of national significance. This
designation is focusing
federal, state, local, and private
efforts into the cooperative
developement of recom
mendations for the long-term
management of the estuary.
"The protection of our
fishery resources and the
water quality in the Sounds is
critical to the commercial and
recreational uses of our
coastal areas. This new
funding will complement other
efforts that together will ensure
a complete and factual basis
for making the important
management decisions
ahead," Congressman Jones
stated.
The report accompanying
H.R. 5126 also urges the Corps
to consider using the inlets of
North Carolina for a piloit
program on restoring fisheries
habitats. (The Corps and the
National Marine Fisheries
Service last year agreed to
begin a joint project to
investigate the practicability of
habitat restoration.)
Finally, H.R. 5162 included
$533,000 for the operation and
maintenance of the Dismal
Swamp Canal, a scenic
alternative to a portion of the
Inland Waterway.
