* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * H w 4 ♦ ♦ 4 44 Month Long Litter Pickup Campaign Raleigh — September has been billed as Clean Up North Carolina Month by Keep North Carolina Beautiful, Inc. and the state Department of Transpor- tatlon's (DOT'S) North Carolina Clean Program. In conjunction with this effort First Lady Dottle Martin has written to county commission chairmen, mayors, chamber of commerce officials and agricultural extension agents to request continued support and help in encouraging volunteer involvement during the cleanup month. Reported show that a record 10,(KK) volunteers picked up 4,000 truckloads of litter from over 7,000 miles of roadway in the April pickup campaign. in her recent letter, Mrs. Martin wrote, "For the first time we are challenging each county in the state to motivate 1% of. its population to J articipate in the litter pickup ampaign.' The county that igs \h the nriost volunteers, representing the county, its cities and towns, will be presented an award by Keep North Carolina Beautiful and North Carolina Clean. Those counties achieving the 1% goal will receive certificates of appreciation." As in past campaigns, DOT will provide large trash bags, pickup service and small car litter bags to groups which clean up trash along state roads. To obtain these supplies, individuals should contact their DOT county coordinator, (in Craven Co. call Ken Mason 637-6261) DOT maintenance crews have chosen the week of September 14-20 to concen trate on picking up litter. There will be atleast three crews per county participating through out the week. These crews will be reinforced with community service workers who include driving while impaired individuals (DWI's) and 1st offenders who are provided through the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. Inmates from the Department of Correction will also assist the crews. Volunteers expected to help during the month long litter reduction effort are Telephone Pioneers of America-Chapter 35, The Carotel Club and Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company.
