Month Long
Litter Pickup
Campaign
Raleigh — September has
been billed as Clean Up North
Carolina Month by Keep North
Carolina Beautiful, Inc. and the
state Department of Transpor-
tatlon's (DOT'S) North
Carolina Clean Program.
In conjunction with this
effort First Lady Dottle Martin
has written to county
commission chairmen,
mayors, chamber of commerce
officials and agricultural
extension agents to request
continued support and help in
encouraging volunteer
involvement during the
cleanup month.
Reported show that a record
10,(KK) volunteers picked up
4,000 truckloads of litter from
over 7,000 miles of roadway in
the April pickup campaign.
in her recent letter, Mrs.
Martin wrote, "For the first time
we are challenging each
county in the state to motivate
1% of. its population to
J articipate in the litter pickup
ampaign.' The county that
igs \h the nriost volunteers,
representing the county, its
cities and towns, will be
presented an award by Keep
North Carolina Beautiful and
North Carolina Clean. Those
counties achieving the 1% goal
will receive certificates of
appreciation."
As in past campaigns, DOT
will provide large trash bags,
pickup service and small car
litter bags to groups which
clean up trash along state
roads. To obtain these
supplies, individuals should
contact their DOT county
coordinator, (in Craven Co.
call Ken Mason 637-6261)
DOT maintenance crews
have chosen the week of
September 14-20 to concen
trate on picking up litter. There
will be atleast three crews per
county participating through
out the week. These crews will
be reinforced with community
service workers who include
driving while impaired
individuals (DWI's) and 1st
offenders who are provided
through the Department of
Crime Control and Public
Safety. Inmates from the
Department of Correction will
also assist the crews.
Volunteers expected to help
during the month long litter
reduction effort are Telephone
Pioneers of America-Chapter
35, The Carotel Club and
Carolina Telephone and
Telegraph Company.
Questions on
Caffeine, Honey
Answered by
Nutritionists
Q. Aren't herbal teas oetter for
you than regular tea? They don’t
have any caffeine.
A. Although most herbal teas are
cafFeine-free, they should be con- ^
sidered drugs, not foods Some her
bal teas may contain potent
chemicals that can cause toxic ef
fects. Hallucinations, nausea,
vomiting, drowsiness, blurred vision
and stomach cramps can occur with
some, even when small amounts are
used. Very few safety tests have
been done on herbs and herbal teas
If you do drink herbal teas, um them
only as an occasional beverage and
not for regular consumption.
Q. Is honey nutritious
sugar?
A. Honey is often promoted as a
healthy, “natural” alternative to
table sugar. The truth is, honey has
only tiny amounts of vitamins and
minerals, mainly calcium, iron and
phosphorua For example, you’d have
to eat 800 tablespoons of honey to
meet the Recommended Dietary
Allowance for calcium, 180 tables
poons for iron and 800 for
phosphorua As far as calories are
concerned, honey has no advantage
oyer sugar in a weight-reduction
diet. Cup for cup, honey has more
calories - 1030 compared to the 770
calories in a cup of sugar. All sugars
have essentially the same nutritive
value: each provides calories for
energy and has little other nutritive
value.

For people with arthritis,
stress is all too often an enemy
rather than an ally, reports the
Arthritis Foundation. Stress is
an essential part of life, and it
can be a positive force, giving
people energy and motivation.
When the stress level becomes
too high, however, it can work
against people, making them
feel tired and apathetic.
Too much stress can make it
harder for people with arthritis
to face' the extra problems
imposed by their diseases.
These problems may include
medical expenses, changes in
lifestyle, side efects from drugs
and concern about the future.
The changes a condition like
arthritis causes in a person's
life can produce stress. This
stress may create muscle
tension, which can increase
