Lawn Care Ralelgh-Homeowners should seed this month to establish a cool season grass lawn or rejuvenate a lawn damaged during the extremely hot, dry summer. To aid homeowners with this project, the following tips are offered by Richard Rhodes, an agronomist with the North Carloina Department of Agriculture (NCDA). Test soil to determine the lawn's nutrient status. This insur'es the proper amount of lime and fertilizer is applied for good growth. Incorporate lime and fertilizer to a depth of 3-4 inches before seeding lawn. If this is not possible, irrigate to help move materials into the soil. Prepare a good seedbed by clutivationg, coring, spiking or raking. This enhances soil-seed contact and improves germination. Use high-quality seed varieties adapted for your area. Varieties of fescue, Kentucky biuegrass, fine fescue and perennial ryegrass are cool-season turfgrasses that perform well in North Carolina. Avoid short-lived grasses such as annual ryegrass. Spread grass seed uniformly with a drop or cycione-type seeder. Apply the recommended rate. The suggested seeding rate for tail fescue is six pounds per 1,000 square feet. For a mixture of taii fecue and Kentucky biuegrass, use five pounds of fescue and one pound of biuegrass per 1,000 square feet. - Mulch lawn with one to two bales of weed-free straw per 1,000 square feet. Mulching conserves soil moisture, slows soil crusting, and reduces soil erosion and seed washing. It is-critical to achieve good seed germination. After mulching, irrigate to wet soil 5-6 inches deep. Then irrigate daily if needed to keep the soil surface from drying out. Continue irrigation until seeds germinate. After germination, less frequent, but heavier, irrigation is desirable. One inch of water per week is generally sufficient. Mow lawn when it reaches a height of 4-5 inches. Cut grass back three inches, using mower with a sharp blade. To prevent grass injury or spread of disease, do not mow wet grass. The straw mulch does not have to be removed before mowing. However, many of these certificates have not been redeemed, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. W.B. Jenkins, president of the North Carolina Farm Bureau, has pointed out that the deadline for selling or redeeming these generic certificates in the marketplace is September 30. After this date, he said, they can only be redeemed or cashed at the county ASCS office for face value, minus 4.3 percent provided by the Gramm- Rudman-Hollings law. "We would there fore urge farmers who have not sold or redeemed their certificates to do so prior to September 30, provided the marketing ot certificate is still favorable," Jenkins said. CertifiC''9tes may be redeemed for commodities, cash or sold to someone else. "Regardless of how small they may be, the certificates do have a value and it is up to the farmer, not ASCS, to redeem them." KEEP NORTH CAROUNA BEAirriFUL ... have you done your part?
