A Tribute To Ms.
Lela Roach
Barrow 1887-
1986
Ms. Lela Barrow passed
away in her home of 66 years
1 V? days on Saturday, Decem
ber 20, 1986 about the same
time she and her husband Ed
Barrow moved into the home
one week before Christmas in
December, 1920.1 mention the
years because this was a place
on College Avenue in
Vanceboro that Ms. Leia truiy
loved and was fortunate to
finish her life there in
happiness with the heip of her
grandsons Biii and Rick
Morris, their wives, and
children.
The Vanceboro area was
fortunate to relive the past 99
years of Ms. Lela's life through
her words of wisdom in the
Highlights newspaper. For the
past four and one half years
she spent tireless hours
writing, reading, and preparing
her weekly articles. Even after
she was stricken with a stroke,
she practiced writing just as
she had done as a child, trying
to regain her writing skill but to
no avail. She retired from
writing for the Highlights in
late 1985. Her first article
appeared in the Highlights July
29, 1982 and she continued
writing weekly articles until her
health failed in late 1985. In the
July 3, 1986 issue of the
Highlights her first reprint of
selected articles began.
