A Tribute To Ms. Lela Roach Barrow 1887- 1986 Ms. Lela Barrow passed away in her home of 66 years 1 V? days on Saturday, Decem ber 20, 1986 about the same time she and her husband Ed Barrow moved into the home one week before Christmas in December, 1920.1 mention the years because this was a place on College Avenue in Vanceboro that Ms. Leia truiy loved and was fortunate to finish her life there in happiness with the heip of her grandsons Biii and Rick Morris, their wives, and children. The Vanceboro area was fortunate to relive the past 99 years of Ms. Lela's life through her words of wisdom in the Highlights newspaper. For the past four and one half years she spent tireless hours writing, reading, and preparing her weekly articles. Even after she was stricken with a stroke, she practiced writing just as she had done as a child, trying to regain her writing skill but to no avail. She retired from writing for the Highlights in late 1985. Her first article appeared in the Highlights July 29, 1982 and she continued writing weekly articles until her health failed in late 1985. In the July 3, 1986 issue of the Highlights her first reprint of selected articles began. Vanceboro Rescue Squad Annual Christmas Dinner Members of the Vanceboro Rescue Squad and their families met at the Vanceboro Fire Department for their Annual Christmas Supper on December 5, 1986. Special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Gorden Joyner. Mr. Joyner is Secretary of the North Carolina Association of Rescue & Emergency Medical Services. Other guests were Miss Cindy Raisor, flight nurse with East Care, Mr. Gary Cash, pilot with East Care; East Care is the Emergency Medical Helicopter Service based at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville; Senator Joe Thomas and his wife Linda; Craven County Commissioner Charlie Potter and wife; Craven County Manager Tyler Harris and wife; Director of Emergency Medical Services of Craven County, Mr. Stanley Kite and wife. The Squad is very proud to have Stanley and Dianne as Squad members. A very delicious meal was provided by River Side Oyster Bar. Following the dinner each guest was recognized. Miss Cindy Raisor spoke on the relationship between the Rescue Squad and East Care as working together and the great benefit offeredtoour community when needed. Mr. Gordon Joyner spoke and reported on cost of Emergency Medical Care provided throughout the state and the benefitof Volunteer Rescue Squads in our communities. Recognition was given to each Rescue Squad member for their dedication and faithful work given toward the Squad. A plaque for "Outstanding Rescue Squad Member for the year 1986" was presented to Mr. Dean Morris for his outstanding and devoted service given to the Squad and community. Dean as the Captain of the Squad has performed his duties very professionally and effectively. Other individuals recognized were the Charter Member, spouses and other members who have provided special services for the Squad. The Vanceboro Rescue Squad has had a very good year with many achievements. The Squad currently has thirty five members Continued to page 9
