Young Trojans Hope
To Contend With D
Fourth-year Jones Senior head
football coach Tony Ciamillo has
set out his team’s goal for its first
four games.
“We want to come out .500 going
into the start of the conference
season,” he said.
The Trojans, which finished the
season last year with a 3-7 record,
will open the season with three
consecutive games on their re
cently renovated field.
In a rematch of last year’s sea
son-opener, Jones hosts defend
ing Eastern 1-A champion Col
umbia Friday. The next weekend.
Class 2-A rival Pamlico will in
vade followed by Class 3-A West
Carteret. Then its on the road to
Rosewood before the opening
game of the Coastal Plains 1-A
season — at home against Rich-
lands.
Going into the season, the Tro
jans will be buoyed by an out
standing defensive performance
in the New Bern Sun Jamboree —
a seven-team scrimmage.
The ']^ojans left their mark on
the scrimmage which included
Williamston, West Craven, Pamli
co, New Bern, Goldsboro and
Havelock.
After the scrimmage, Ciamillo
said the New Bern head coach
came over to him and shook his
hand — complimenting him for
the Trojans’ “hellacious” defense.
“Our intensity and enthusiasm
were very good,” Ciamillo said.
He said his players, after a 10-
down defensive set against Class
4-A New Bern, petitioned the offi
cials for five more defensive plays.
That, of course, was not
allowed. „
In other developments from the
scrimmage, Ciamillo said he was
bothered by the number of small
iryuries his squad suffered. But,
he said, he thought most players
would be ready by the season
opener.
The scrimmage answered one
question for the Trojans — Arvin
Rhodes, a 5-8, 185-pound senior,
earned the starting slot at quarter
back after a preseason battle with
Jimmy Meadows, a 5-9,150-pound
senior.
Ciamillo said Meadows per
formed so well on defense that he
earned a starting position on that
side of the ball. And, he would
give the ’Trojans the luxury of hav
ing a strong backup at quarter
back to run the split-back veer
offense.
Ciamillo said Meadows directs
the option attack “a little bit bet
ter” while Rhodes throws “a little
bit better.”
“Both do something a little bet
ter than the other,” Ciamillo said.
“It (offense) is not going to be
too confusing,” he said. “We’ll run
the basic plays. We’ll have five or
six to the left and five or six to the
right. If we execute, we’ll be okay.
We’re going to be simple.”
One thing is certain — a number
of the running plays will be
directed behind lineman Tracy
Williams, a 6-0, 225-pound junior
tackle who earned all-C^oastal
Plains honors last season.
Ciamillo said Williams bench
presses 300 pounds and is one of
the strongest players on the Tro
jan squad.
But, Ciamillo promised, not all
the running plays would go to Wil
liams’ side.
“We will want to run to the back
side with the same confidence we
have when we run behind the big
tackle,” he said.
“We have a lot of work to do on
the line. We have to learn to come
off the ball and to sustain our
blocks. We are not exceptionally
big — except for Tracy. We will
have to make it through aggres
siveness and speed.”

William Tharringlon, Adam Nattocks, Sam Ervin, Chris Brown and Charles Banks.
Joining Williams on the line will

pound senior. TTie other linemen
on the roster are Charles Banks,
Jonas Bender, Keith Dillahunt,
Sam Ervin, Derrick Franks, Adam
Mattocks, David Murrell, Everett
Rhodes, Tim Roberts, Ramardy
Smith and Dedric Ward.
Ervin will handle long snapping
chores in the place of Banks, who
will be slowed for two or three
weeks by a chipped bone in his
arm. Ervin will be snapping to
Chris Brown on punts. Ciamillo
said Brown also will handle place-
kicking duties in addition to his
receiving chores.
The Trojans’ roster lists 29 play
ers including 19 lettermen and 10
returning starters.
Ciamillo is pleased with the atti
tude his players have displayed
thus far.
“’They have hustle and enthu
siasm and their attitude has been a
plus,” he said. “We are going to be
an improved team. The biggest
thing now is the jelling. Right
now, we are trying to make that
mold. We are trying to figure out
who will play where. We have a lot
of young kids who can play. And
we have a lot of first-year-type
seniors.
“We are going to be depending
on a lot of kids to go both ways and
we are going to have to have some
juniors to come through.
“Jones Senior is going to be bet
ter — but, a lot of the teams we
play are also going to be better.”
Ciamillo said he hasn’t timed
his players in the 40-yard dash.
“We just have a race and whoev
er wins, that’s who’ll carry the
mail for us,” he said.
The Trojan mailman-apparent
is Calvin Rhodes, a 5-8,173-pound
junior. Vadra Harris, a 5-9, 160-
pound senior, is also slated for
ball-carrying duties.
Defensively, Jones will line up
in a 5-3 alignment with Issac Fon
ville and Ward at ends and Tracy
Williams at noseguard. Ciamillo
said Strayhorn would play in a
down position. He added that
Everett Rhodes, a 5-11,270-pound
senior, was also being considered.
Charle Koonce and Harris are the
leading linebacker candidates.
For Ciamillo, the secondary is a
big question.
“It might be the strongest ever if
our young kids come along,” he
said. “If they can be quick enough
and react fast enough to help us
out.”
Ciamillo said the conference
will be better.
“It (conference) is going to be
much improved,” he said. “We’ll

“Southwest Onslow and Camp

said. “Richlands had a fabulous
season last year and they should
be just as tough this year. Swans-
