MARY HELEN RODMAxX ELECTED PRESIDENT OF
STUDENT BODY
Mary Helen Rodman was elected president of the
Student Government Association on Tuesday afternoon,
March 7. Other candidates were Erwin Gant of ^Ar
lington, N. C., and Laura Gordon, of Leaksville, JN. O.
Mary Helen is from Washington, N. 0., where she
was graduated from high school last year with honors.
At Saint Mary’s she has continued the splendid record
that she continued the splendid record that she made
in high school as an officer of her class, a member of
the Beta Club, and president of the Hi-Y Ever since
she entered Saint Mary’s her teachers and fellow in
dents have found her dependable and cooperative. Her
election, as well as the large number of her friends in
the school, give evidence of her popularity.
The Student Government Association was organized
at Saint Mary’s so that the students could assume the
responsibility of striving to uphold the principles o
honor and self-reliance, and to promote successful group
living. The office of president of this student organi
zation is one that demands dependability and wdling-
ness to work. The Student Government and the Honor
System of Saint Mary’s has been very successful and is
outstanding among those of the State, /his method of
student control in cooperation with the faculty has been
found to be most beneficial to both students and faculty.
When interviewed, Mary Helen said, “It is practi
cally impossible to tell you all how much you electing
me to this office means. I realize the faith and re
sponsibility that you have placed in me, and i will do
everything I can to live up to this honor.
This election was the first in the series of elections to
choose next year’s student leaders.
GYM DEMONSTRATION
Culminating in daring feats and impressively differ
ent pyramids, the Gym Demonstration of March 6,
directed by Miss Harvey and Miss Goss, was a master
piece of skill and art.
The tempo for the evening was set by groups °f recre
ational and precision marching. These were followed
by exercises representing the rhythinic movement in
sports and a special corrective routine for common
faults in posture.
Each gym class exhibited one of seven types of tradi
tional social dance steps, beginning with Csebogar an
the Gavotte and continuing on down to the modern
waltz and fox trot. Experts in all our indoor sports
displayed their ability, after which some real bigma-Mu
competition took place in a human croquet game, (in
cidentally the Sigma’s won.) There followed tap dances
by both the beginners and the advanced classes and a
Pantomime Dance by the Dance Club.
The Tumbling Class startled the audience with ex
traordinary skill in forward, backward, and double
rolls, head and hand stands, “through the hoop,” and
“jump the buck.” The show ended with four spectacu
lar pyramids. However, the climax of the evening was
the presentation of flowers to Miss Harvey and Miss
Goss in the students’ recognition and appreciation of the
hard work they had expended to make the demonstra
tion a success. The parents and faculty were amazed
and pleased at the training, skill, and talent displayed
by the students in this demonstration, which included
practically the whole student body.
