Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About
Nothing,” the annual commence
ment play under the direction of
Miss Florence C. Davis, will be pre
sented tonight on the campus at
8 :15.
The main action of the comedy
involves the sharp-tongued, witty
Beatrice and Benedict, the swagger
ing hero, played respectively by Vir
ginia Smith and Preston Wescoat.
For contrast to this couple is the
romance of quiet, gentle Hero and
her lover Claudio, played by Phyllis
Costner and Nellie Truslow. As
usual, Shakespeare includes his fool,

uate school at the University of
Richmond and received his Ph.D.
from the University of Virginia
and LL.D. from the University of
South Carolina.

He was professor of English at
William and Mary College, Wil
liamsburg, Virginia, until he was
appointed the school’s Norfolk di
rector. In 1933, while he was
holding this same position. Dr.
Gwathmey was made jiresident of
Converse. His first appointee to
Converse was Dr. Stone.
Dr. Gwathmey is noted in Spar
tanburg not only for his outstand
ing work at Converse but also for
his work as a vestryman in the
Church of the Advent and his part
in community life.

10:00 a.m. Freshmen and Juniors
will lead the procession followed
by the two graduating classes,
faculty, clergy, and trustees.
After the auditorium exercises,
the procession will go to the
Chapel where diplomas will be
awai-ded to the Senior class by
Bishop Penick and Dr. Stone.
Bishop Penick will deliver a brief
farewell address.
After the conclusion of the ex
ercises in the Chapel, students,
faculty, officers, clergy, and trus
tees will march to the front cam-

Class Day exercises for the two
graduating classes of Saint Mary’s
will be held in the auditorium on
Saturday, June 4. The sophomores
will present their last program at
10:30 in the morning and the seniors
at 4:00 in the afternoon.
After sojJiomore class president
Nancy Hamel opens the exercises
with a welcome to the audience, Jose-
phine Cooper will lead the sopho
more prayer and Beth Toy will call
the class roll. During the program
the traditional gift to the school will
be presented by Nancy Hamel. Ruth
Clark and Caroline Camp will pre
sent their predictions of the future,
via the class prophecy, and Betty
Bowles will read the class poem. The
last will and testament, written by
Berta Allen Russ and Lucile Best,
will precede the reading of the soph
omore superlatives, and then the
class song will be rendered by the
sophomores. The Rev. Mr. I. Hard
ing Hughes will close the program
with the benediction.
The president of the senior class,
Sarah Walston, will preside over the
senior exercises. Following Sarah’s
welcome, Lenoir Williams will lead
the senior prayer and Frances Isbell,
secretary of the class, will call the
roll. Corneille Rylander and Jane
Gower will give the past history,
after which Rose Potter and Logan
Vaught will read their prophecies..
Sarah Walston will present the sen
ior gift to the school, Logan Vaught
will read the class poem, and Helen
Eppes and Convere Jones will read
the last will and testament. The
reading of superlatives will be read
by Betty Lokey.
The inauguration ceremony for
Frances Drane, incoming president
of the student body, will be conduct
ed by Luck Flanders, past vice-
president, and then C. A. P. Moore
will present the Publications Awards.
The Stage Coach Avill be dedicated
by Helen Eppes, followed by the
singing of “The Belles of Saint
Mary’s.” The Rev. Mr. I. Harding
Huges will end the exercises with
the benediction.
