m III|‘ The Belles of Saint Mary’s NC Student Journalists Convene For Press Conference In Carolina Hotel Dn And Mrs. Stone Entertain With Tea state College Plays Host to Col legiate Press Association N. C. State College played host to the North Carolina Collegiate Press Association which held its annual three day meeting in Ealeigh begin ning Thursday, April 21. The gathering, attended by publi cations representatives of colleges and universities throughout the state, featured panel discussions, and clinics designed to aid in solving the problems of student journalism, and to introduce and compare new trends in the field of the collegiate press. included on the program were dis cussions led by such prominent jour nalists as Noel Yancey, head of the Associated Press News Bureau in Ealeigh; Dr. Lodwick Hartley, head of the Department of English at North Carolina State College; Don Barry, editor of the Durham Sun; and George Anderson, news editor of the Greensboro Daily News. On Friday, April 22, the student •delegates were entertained at a luncheon at the North Carolina State College Cafeteria as guests of the State College Board of Student Publications. The Collegiate Press Association banquet was held Friday night for the delegates in the ball room of the Carolina Hotel. The volleyball tournament came to a close on Monday, April 18, ivhen the Sigmas defeated the Mus 86 to 85. Both teams had previously ivon one game. On April 11 the Mus won with a score of 82 to 28, and on April 14 the Sigmas won 41 to 28. The captain of the Sigmas was Evelyn Oettinger, and the captain of tile Mus was Heilig Harney. The members of the Sigma first team ivere Evelyn Oettinger, Helen Eoberson, Frances Clark, Pepper Neal, Dot Teague, Betsy Jones, Euth Saunders, and Anne McMullan. The members of the Mu first team were Heilig Harney, Beth Harris, Margie Sheridan, Cynthia Perkins, Ann Shuford, Ann Duncan, Aurelia Pulton, and Frances Draiie. Dr. and Mrs. Eichard G. Stone entertained the senior and sopho more classes Thursday, April 28, at a tea from four until six o’clock. Eeceiving at the front door ivere Dr. and Mrs. Stone and the Eev. Mr. and Mrs. I. Harding Hughes. Miss Elizabeth Bason re ceived in the parlor. Mrs. J. W. Harrelson, Mrs. Joseph B. Chesh ire, and Mrs. J. M. Dick presided ovei' the punch bowl. Miss Ann Dewey Heartt, Nannie Moore, Prances Drane, and Cynthia Per kins served. Mixed spring flowers were used throughout the house. In the din ing room the table was covered with a lace cloth and graced by a bowl of mixed flowers. A punch course with . accessories was served. She ^ ^ said that subject matter was IC important, for a subject coun C P handled in many different Frances Drane explained^ STUDENTS AWARDED NEW OFFICERS ERECTED At the final meeting held on Sat urday morning, the conference elect ed officers for the coming year. Offi cers chosen were Ellen Metz of WOm an’s College, president; Joe Han cock of N. C. State College, vice- president ; Garland Eakestraw of Guilford College, secretary; and Leo Derrick of Wake Forest, treasurer. Winners in the competitive jour nalism contest were announced at the Saturday morning meeting. Ee ceiving first awards were the W’^Om an’s College Carolinian as the All- State A Newspaper; the Elon Ma roon and Gold as the All-State B Newspaper; and the Mars Hill Ilill- top as the All-State C Newspaper. A dual first prize was given to Duke and Woman’s College for the best literary magazines and "Woman’s College was awarded the first prize for the best yearbook. Delegates attending the convention from Saint Mary’s were Berta Allen Euss, Barbara Wooten, and Scotty Kent. A number of students received athletic awards in assembly on April 28 and May 3. Eobbie Eob erson, Ann Shuford, Dot Teague, Beth Harriss, Evelyn Oettinger, Heilig Harney, Cynthia Perkins, and Pepper Neal made the volley ball all-star team. Students earn ing lifesaving certificates wmre Mary Mar Eagland, Martha Nash, Eveiyn Oettinger, A^irginia Mc Farland, Martha AVoolery, Billie Schulken, Alice Hicks, King Eis- ley, Mary Euth Euble, Alice Jones, Dusty Sewall, Cynthia Davis, Alice Wilson, Nancy Harp, Lila Eousseau, and Ann Shuford. Betsy Shepard, Dusty Sewall, Su zanne Dawson, and Billie Schul ken became Letter Club members on April 28, and on May 3 Cynthia Perkins, Ann Shuford, and Pat George were invited into the Let ter Club. On May 3 the winning hall in the volleyball tournament was also announced. Members of West Eock’s winning team are Betty Bowles, Pepper Neal, Ann Shuford, Beth Harriss, Alice AYil- son, Billie Schulken, Lila Eous seau, and Jean English. (From Page 1, Col. 8) Canterbury Club. She was on the second team in basketball and cap tain of the Mu volleyball team; Heilig also writes for the BELLES. This is her first year at Saint Mary’s. Eosalie Huske, a junior from Fay etteville, is a new girl this year. She is secretary of the legislative body, a member of the nominating committee, the Canterbury Club, and is a Sigma. She has been elect ed president of the senior class for next year. Berta Allen Euss, a day student from Ealeigh, is business manager of the Stage Coach. She is a mem ber of the BELLES and Bulletin staffs, the Sigma Pi Alpha, the nom inating committee, and the honor council. She is serving on the deco rating committee for the Junior- Senior dance and is a Mu. Barbara AYooten, a junior from Gastonia, will be president of the Stu dent Government Association next year. Barbara is a Mu and has been very active in sports and school ac tivities during her three years at Saint Mary’s. She is a regular con tributor to the BELLES and Bul letin. This year she is headline edi tor of the BELLES, a member of the choir. Sigma Pi Alpha, Glee Club. She is also a hall representa tive and on the Y.AV.C.A. council.
