Altar Guild Picks Elder as Chairman Ray, Lynch, Fulton, Brundage Serve as Committee Chairman Prances Elder, a senior from Hyde, Md., will head the Altar Guild for the year 1949-50. The Altar Guild is an organization composed of juniors and seniors which has charge of the prepara tion of the chapel for services. Frances is a second-year girl at Saint Marv’s; she is in the Canter bury Club, the choir, and she is a Sigma. There are four divisions of the , Altar Guild; the linen coinmittee of which Betty Ray is chairman, the flower committee of which Olivia Lynch is chairman, the brass committee ivith Aurelia Pulton cliairiiian, and the silver committee of which Helen Brun dage is chairman. Jones,Winters Speak to Alumnae Convention Miss Martha Dabney Jones and Miss Dora Winters, Aluninae Sec retary, attended a meeting of the Ricliinond Alumnae Chapter, Sat urday, October 8. Miss Jones left for Riehmond Friday, October J; Mi.ss AVinters followed her Satur- Miss Jones was the principal speaker at the alumnae luncheon held at the William Byrd Hotel. As her topic she used ‘ Saint Mary’s Today and Tomorrow.” Miss Jones brought the chapter up to date on the recent activities at Saint Mary’s, and explained the present needs. . , , . Miss Jones emphasized the in terest the school still holds for departed students, and extended to them a welcome to return to Saint Mary’s at any time. Miss AA^inters included in her report a description of the redecoration of the dining hall and described the new decorating scheme. Mrs. William D. Careton, Jb, conducted the meeting. Among those present was Miss isannie Marriot, the former dietitian, who attended the meeting from her home in Burkville, Va. Choir Elects New Officers For Year Ray, Strosnider, Neal Will Lead in Choir Activities Members of the Saint Mary’s choir elected officers to serve for the coming year at their weekly meeting Thursday, October 6. Elected were the following: Betty Ray, president; Frankie Stros nider, vice-president; and Pepper Neal, secretary. Other members of the organi zation include Mary Smith, Mar jorie Pentoii, Ann Shuford, Jean Wranek, Olivia Lynch, Betty Ann AVilliamson and Caroline Cobey, who are first sopranos; Nancy Anne Halton, Susan Friday, Vir ginia Mowery, Beverly Grace Rut ter, and Caroljm AVestbrook are the new members of that section. The old members of the second soprano group include Susannah Dell and Anne Cahoon, while the new members are LaNelle Ed wards, Louise Bonin, and Edith Rogers. The alto section is composed of Nancy Harp, Catherine Eichel- berger, Dorothy Parshley, and Mary Davenport, who will work with veteran members Elizabeth Kent, Barbara AVooten, Heilig Harney, and Prances Elder. The choir is under the direction of Mr. Russell Broughton. Sigma Pi Alpha Holds Picnic Meeting At Hut Members of Sigma Pi Alpha, honorary language fraternity, held a picnic in the hut on Mon day, October 3, at 6:30 p. m. The fraternity members roasted weiu- ers and marshmallows. After the meal there was a short business meeting with Anne Cahoon, president of the Saint Mary’s chapter, presiding, and Madame Smith, advisor, acting as consultant. Members present were Anne Cahoon, Barbara Wooten, Aurelia Fulton, Helen Brundage, Mary Anne Rose, Betty Bowles, Betty Brown Lewis, Mary Scarboro, Berta Allen Russ, Kathryn Holmes, Ellen AA’^eaver, and Betty Ray. Dalton, Risley, and Cobbs Lead Classes The junior class has elected its officers for the year, who are: Stella Cobbs, president; Martha McGuirk and Betty Ann Williamson, Honor Council representative. Miss Nancy McLaurin of the English Dejiart- meiit won the approval of the tlass as faculty advisor. Stella, who is this year manager of the circulation staff of the BELLES, is also a member of the Canterbury Club, the Dramatic Club, and the Granddaughters’ Club. A member of the Altar Guild, Stella is a Mu. Alartha, who is a Mu and from Morganton, is a member of the Altar Guild, the Granddaughter’s Club, and the Y.W.C.A. She is on the circulation staff of the BELLES. Betty Ann, from Oerro Gordo, is president of the Glee Club, and vice- jiresident of the Y.W.C.A. Sally is from Char lotte; she is a member of the Stage Coach stafl, the Y.AY.C.A., and she is a Sigma. Rachel Cozart is the member of the Honor Council who was selected to represent both the freshman and sophomore classes. Rachel, who is from Fuquay Springs, was presi dent of the freshman class last year at Saint Alary’s. She is a member of the Beacon, the BELLES circula tion staff, the Y.AP.C.A., and the Doctor’s Daughters Club. He who is sure of himself is will ing to let others be themselves. He who is unstable in his own character must reassure himself by trying to compress others into his mold. Joshua Loth Liebman Peace of Mind Sigma’s, Mu’s Select Cheer Leaders For *50 Sigma and AIii teams selected their cheer leaders Tuesday, Oc tober 4. The teams each selected five girls out of the large group who tried out. The new Sigma cheer leaders are Lila Rousseau, a senior from Winston-Salem; Peggy Hooker, a junior from Alartinsville, Virginia; Harriet Tew, a junior from Savannah, Georgia; Lucie Ann Boddie, a junior from Rocky Alount; and Mary Louise Byram, a senior from AVashington.
