Enjoy Annual Dance
Saint Mary’s Juniors held their
annual Junior-Senior dance in honor
of the senior class in the gymnasium
8:30 through 12:00 Saturday, May
3. Previously the Juniors had se
lected Stairiuay to the Stars as the
theme and Eoy Cole and Orchestra
as entertainment.
The decorations followed the star
light theme, and under the direction
of Syb Hamer, chairman of deco
rations, the juniors converted the
gym into a moonlight paradise.
Couples entered the gym through a
silver archway bespeckled with stars
and danced under a blue crepe paper
ceiling interspersed with strings of
silver stars. Hanging from the cen
ter of the ceiling was a huge lighted
Moravian star. Clouds and stars cov
ered the blue walls of the gym and
on one of the end walls was a glit
tering silver half moon. The center
attraction, however, was the band
stand around which swung two curv
ing stairways reaching to the top
of the gym. The stairways, covered
with glittering stardust, and the sil
ver railing completed the theme.
Stairway to the Stars.
Composing the receiving line were
the presidents of both classes and
their dates; Dr. and Mrs. Stone;
Miss Alartha Dabney Jones; and
Aliss Livernian, junior class advisor.
During intermission refreshments
of cookies and punch were served
from a table covered with embroid
ered white cloth and centered with a
large bowl of varicolored flowers.
The figure took place during the
first part of intermission.
Those composing the figure were
the officers of both classes, the Honor
Council representatives, the Student
Government officers. Hall Council
officers, and the committee chair
men.
Alumnae Association
Head Speaks At SMS
Mrs. Lela'nd Miller, of Richmond,
Virginia, president of the Alumnae
Association, talked to the students
in assembly yesterday about Saint
Mary’s when she was here and about
the girls in her graduating class.
Mrs. Miller graduated from Saint
Mary’s 38 years ago with .sixteen
other girls. At graduation the girls
wore white dresses, long white stock
ings, and no lipstick or rouge. The
rules then were quite different. No
boys were present at dances and a
girl was shii^ped for walking down
to the “Little Store.” After Mrs.
Miller left Saint Mary’s she real
ized that even in strange cities there
was a bond of friendship among
Saint Mary’s alumnae.

Sponsors Annual Event
Saint Mary’s held the annual
May Day festivities Saturday, May
3, on the oast campus. The theme
was “Toyland.” Members of Orche
sis, under the direction of Miss Peg
gy Cameron, sponsored the event.
Pat Boesser reigned Queen of
May Day, and Myra 'I'liayer at
tended her as Maid of Honor. The
court included Nancy Boston, Nancy
Bowles, Barbara Carter, Margaret
Cheatham, Syb Hamer, Eve Har
grave, Libby Huffman, Flicka
Keane, Catherine Morrison, Lois
Perry, Anna Redding, and “Peeps”
Williams.
The princesses wore strapless
bouffant evening dresses in i)astel
shades with net stoles and sheer
matching garden hats. They car
ried boiKiucts of snaj)dragons and
fern with trailing variated ribbons.
Maid of Honor, Myra Thayer,
wore the same styled dress as the
princesses but in aqua with a pink
garden hat trimmed in aqua. She
carried a bouquet of j)ink carnations
and snapdragons.
()ueen Pat’s dress was made of
white tiered ruflled tulle with au un
derskirt and bodice of white satin
with cap sleeves. The bodice was
trimmed in hand-made white satin
roses, silver sequins, rhinestones, and
seed i)earls. Her dress had a train
thirty feet long and a Queen Eliza
beth ruff. 'I'he Maid of Honor
crowned the ()neen with a coronet
of satin and lilies of the valley. Pat
carried a bouquet of white lilies of
the valley.
The i)ageant opened with the ar
rival of Grandfather, Bimcy, and
Bill, portrayed by Alice Hicks, Gene
Overbeek, and Helen Setzer, in Toy-
land. Jan Winders, as the mis
chievous imp, welcomed them and
called the toys from the Doll House
to dance. After the court’s arrival,
toy fairies si)rinkled the land with
fairy dust, and the Teddy Bears had
a picnic. Next Buncy and Bill eag
erly watched the puppets dance and
the soldiers march. After the pretty
French Dolls danced, the toys formed
a corridor for the departure of the
queen and her princesses. When the
toys went back to their storybook
pages, Buncy and Bill regretfully
left Toyland.
