IVIAR Y ’S Vol. XVII, No. 12 RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA Annual, Paper Appoint Staffs The new editors of the Stage ( ottcli and Belles have appointed their assistants and nnder editors for the coming year. Nancy Crow has been chosen assistant editor for the Stage Coach ’for 1955-66. She is a dance mar shal tliis year and has l)een elected a inarshal for next year. She is ’also in the Dramatics Club and Or- ehesis and is chairman for the May pay costume committee and a mem ber of the honorary fraternity, Sigma Pi Alpha. On the Stage Coach this year she worked on the faculty news and helped with com piling. A day student, Ellen Johnson, is filling the ])osition of business man ager for the Stage Coach. She has been in the Glee Club for the past Cvo years and participated in May Gay last year. She is also a mem ber of the Sigma Pi Alpha. Both of the girls hope they have a different and interesting theme to entertain next years subscribers. Martha Brooks and Ann liuffin have been named under editors for Hie Jieltes staff. Martha holds the Ijosition of feature editor, while 'Ann is the news editor. I Ann has had experience as editor jOf _ her liigh school iiaper and in Ipriting a teenage column for her jhome town pajier. She belongs to ;jhe YDC, and acts as a Sigma cheer- jleader. Members In a recent election tivo members of the J iinior Class, Ginny Dawson and Ginger Walser, were chosen as Honor Council representatives for next year. That same week the Honor Council chose Ginger Walser from the two to serve as secretary of the Student Government in the year ’55-56. Ginger, who hails from High Point, is a member of the YWCA a Hall Ee])resentative, and a iVic Last year at High Point High School she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Na tional Beta Club and was a writer for the school paper. Ginny, who has been at St. Mary’s for three years, is a member of the Honor Council, YWCA, Altar ppild, and the YDC. Ginny is a Sigma. The two girls will be installed formally in May. Euth Watkins has been recently elected chief marshal and Lenore Smith, another new marshal, has been chosen as chief dance marshal. Other members of Euth’s staff are Ylary Louise Bizzell, Sumner Par ham, Nancy Prow, and Coles Cath- cart. Euth has been an active student at St. Mary’s for three years, and this year she is in the YDC, Grand daughters’ Club, and the Dramatics Club. She is a member of the 2Iu’s. the annual staff, and in her junior year she'is acting as a dance mar shal. Lenore, also a third-year student, hails from Tallahassee, Florida. She participates in the YDC, Choir, and the Sigma Pi Alpha. She is a Mu and a member of the May Court. Mary Louise, a graduate from Goldsboro High School, is a Sigma Awrleaderj^^YWHyme^^ Miss Gate’s Pupils Sing in Assembly In an assembly program Thurs day, April 7, the voice students of Miss Geraldine Cate presented their annual recital. The students par ticipating were Ina Gee Eidley, Valentine McMillan, Patsy Moore’ Lemma Baucom, Carolyn MMrlick, and Carolyn Wise. ’ To begin the program, Carolyn Wise sang “Little Shepherd Song.” Ina Gee presented “Spirit Flower,” and Val sang “There Cried a Gull” and “I Heard a Piper Piping.” Patsy Moore sang “The Little French Clock” and “Bitterness of Love.” “Un Bel Di” was rendered by Lemma Baucom, while “Neath the Southern Moon” was sung by Carolyn Warlick. Val and Patsy won superior rating in the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs at their annual contest in Durham, Friday, A])ril 7. Coach staff^ member, and a YDC member. She also jiarticipates in the Doctors’ Daughters’ Club activi ties. Sumner Parham came to St. Mary’s as a freshman from Ilender-' son. Sumner, a ihi, is a member of the Granddaughters’ Club and YWCA. Coming to St. Mary’s from Hous ton, Texas, Nancy Crow is a mem ber of the Belles staff, YEC, and Orchesis. For the coining year she will be assistant editor of the Stage- Coach. Nancy’s only comment on her election to the jiositiou of mar shal was, “I just hope I won’t dro]) the collection plate!” As treasurer of the junior class. Coles Cathcart comes to St. Mary’s fiom Columbia, S. C. She is a mein- ■ her of the Choir, Orchesis, May Court, and the YEC. Former SMC Student Presents Recital Harriett Harriss, a former St. Mary’s student, presented a voice recital in an assembly jirograni Tuesday, April 12. Harriett is" HOW a^ student at Woman’s College in Greensboro. In Imr program Harriett sang “Twentieth Century” by Duke, “Poiirqiioi” and “Soiirire”' by Mes siaen, “Two Swans on a Lake” and “My Heart Ever Faithful” by Bach, an aria from “La Forz a del Destin” by Verdi, and “Steal Me Sweet Thief” by Menotti from “The Old Maid and the Thief.” On April 19, Harriett will sing as soloist with the Greensboro Sym- jihony Orchestra. While at St. Mary’s she sang in “The Old Maid and the Thief” and ])resented a cer tificate recital. She was also secre tary of the hall council and a mem ber of the May Court. Glee Club Gives Concert April 20 I he St. Mary’s Glee Chub under the direction of Miss Geraldine Cato will present a joint concert with the Men’s Glee Club of the University of North Carolina in the school au ditorium on Wednesday night, Ajiril 20. I he Men’s Glee Ciiib is directed by Mr. Joel Carter of Carolina. ^ The St. Mary’s Glee Club will suig two groups of songs, and the Carolina Glee Club will sing two groujis. Then the two Glee Clubs will combine to sing The Foundling Hospital Anthem l>y George Freil- eric Handel. Handel composi’d this anthem in 1749 for a concert to he given in the (‘ha])el at the Foundling Ilosjiital. The money that was raised by the concert was used to complete the chajiel. The work con cludes with the “Hallelujah (’horns” from Handel’s Messiah. The St. Mary’s Glee Club will sing six Liehslicdu Waltzes by Jo hannes Brahms, London-derri} .\ir. Summertime by George Gershwin Pastoral by Gustar Holst, The Don key Serenade by Eiidolf Friinl, and In the Still of the Night by Cole Porter. Mott Butler Becomes Sec. of Hall Council Mott Butler’s reward for two years of loyal service to St. Mary’s was presented to her this week in the form of an election. “Surprised to death,” Mott was elected by her fel low students to the jiosition of Secre tary of Hall Council. An athlete as well as an executive, Mott is a key member of the All Star volleyball and basketball teams. She was invited to join the Letter Club this week. She is a YWCA mem ber, a Alu, and a Young Eepiibliean.
