Explore Books" Is Book Week Theme The theme of National Book Week, November 17-23 was Explore with Books.” The St. Mary’s library is plac ing special emphasis on literature concerning the International Geo physical Year which is the most im portant exploration of today. The idea of the International Geo physical Year originated in 1950 at a meeting of scientists in the United States. These men decided that great scientific advances could be made through such a project. Mid-1957 was set as a starting point, and each na tion chose committees to direct the work. A network of more than 2,000 scientific stations has been set up all over the world to explore the sea, sky, tides, earthquakes, and winds. Some of the questions which the scientists will try to solve about the earth’s atmosphere are: What relation is there between sunspots and the weather? How much meteoric matter reaches the earth’s atmosphere? What is the origin of various mysterious radio “noises”? How do the sun s rays ionize the earth’s atmosphere? The scientists will also try to answer questions about the earth s interior and its crust, such questions as: How is the earth’s mass distributed? What materials make up the mantle? What is the nature of the earth’s core? Can climatic history be read in glaciers? What do glaciers do to the climate? Can sea-level changes help forecast climate? How does gravity vary over the earth? Is the crust different under oceans and continents? This 18-month year of scientific ex ploration is expected to yield vast quantities of new information. In the library there is a very attrac tive and informational display of books, maps, posters, pamphlets, and magazine articles concerning the IGY, the display being designed to give the students a better idea of the purpose and significance of the International Geophysical Year.
