^>4^ Belles Vol. XXII, No. 5 OF ST. MARY’S RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA December 19, 1958 Chief Marshal Selected Miss Octavia Phillips, a senior from Rockingham, N. C., has been selected as the new Chief Marshal to replace Miss Catherine Church, who left St. Mary’s during Thanks giving. Octavia is also a member of Hall Council and is active in plan ning Senior Follies. Cinda Henderson is filling the spot Octavia had before she be came Chief Marshal. Cinda is from Lynchburg, Va., and participates in many school activities. She is a Hall Counselor and a member of the Altar Guild. Letter Club Claims Five New Members The Letter Club has five new members: Eleanor Bullock, Nan Bailey, Florence Nash, Caroline Clark, and Amelia Yancey. Eleanor is a senior from Rocky Alount. She is president of Orchesis, a member of the Altar Guild, and on the Belles staff. Nan is a senior from Wendell. She is president of the Commerci al Class, a IMu cheerleader, in the Y.W.C.A., and is also a member of the Altar Guild and on the Belles staff. Florence and Carolina juniors from Tarboro, are in the swimming club. Florence is also president of the .Junior Class. Amelia, a sophomore from IMar- ion, is a member of the Y. D. C., the Canterbury Club, and the Dra matics Club. She is also on the Belles staff. RCMA Presents Concert On Dec. 3rd, the Civic Music Association i)rescnted Arthur Fer- I’ante and Louis Leicher who are duo-])ianists. They included in their concert such classical numbers as ‘'Sheep May Safely Graze” by ^kach and “Variations on a Theme cf Haydn” by Brahms. They also played a series of impular and semi- classical numbers. Radio and television audiences know Ferrante and Leicher for their guest appearances on such hrograms as The Ernie Kovacs miow and the AVoolworth Hour, riiey have also performed with leading orchestras throughout the Country. Recently they appeared on the Perry Como Show. . Rhe concert was thoroughly en joyed by many St. Mary’s girls. Orchesis Presents The Littlest Angel Orchesis presented one of eveiy child’s favorite Christmas stories The Littlest Angel by Charles Tazewell for their annual assembly program, December 16. It was pre sented with all the beauty and spiritual value that the narrative possesses. A.11 of Orchesis takes part in the production. The characters are as follows: Mary Dale, the Littlest Angel; iHemrie Mosier, the Guid ing Angel; Catherine Potter, the Archangel; Eleanor Bulluck, the understanding angel; Alice AA ilson, a messenger; Hadley ^lorgan, the Celestial gate keeper. The Patriarch Prophets are Carol Ann Tadlock, Alag Greg ory, Celeste Barnett, Patricia Arm strong, Patricia Perkmson, and Erwin Parrott. Edith Alston is an Archangel. The gift bearing angels are Betsy Nichols, .lane Teague, Toppy Cameron, and Canton oa’i age. The stoiw of the Littlest Angel is familiar to everyone and for this reason there will not be a narrator. It is one continuous dance 'vith no lireaks. The music was selected from The Immortal ]]orks of Ketelby: “In a Monastery Gar 3.— y s? s? s? » Si? S? s? s? s# s? Sif s? Sf s# iiHcrriT (Hbristmas W ♦ ♦ den,” “Bells Across the Meadow,” and’ “Sanctuary of the Heart.” The behind the scene workers are: Luanne Hobbs, in charge of scenery and stage settings; Alarga- ret McKee, in charge of the lights; and Mrs. Bailey, the adviser of Orchesis—one of the most import ant back stagers. Besides putting this program on for the student body of St. Mary’s, Orchesis has been invited to present it to Myrtle Underwood December 18. This is quite an opportunity for all the girls because it will give them a chance to perform before different types of audiences and re ceive their reactions. This is the first time that Orchesis has ever performed somewhere besides at St. Alary’s. A lot of work has been put into the production of the Littlest Angel. This is the first perform ance which the new members have had a part in. Orchesis is sorry to announce that Betsy Yow will not be able to dance, but she is design ing the props. Orchesis would like to thank Dr. Guerry for his help and advice throughout the prcjiaration for this program and also Dr. Brown who taped the music. Music Group Names Section Chairman The fall conference of the North Carolina Aliisic Educators’ Associ ation, which met recently at AVoman’s College in Greensboro, North Carolina, has selected as its piano section chairman, Air. Donald Peery, of our own St. Alary’s Alusic Department. Three Seniors Tapped by Circle Three outstanding members of the senior class were recently tap ped into the Circle. They were Georgia Cobb, Julia Oliver, and Sally Blackmon. Georgia is from Goldsboro, North Carolina, and is a AIu. She is Sec retary of Hall Council this year. Georgia’s other activities include being a AIu cheerleader, a member of the Granddaughters’ Club, and Altar Guild. She participates in athletics, and is a speed-ball all star. She became a member of the Letter Club this year. Georgia plans to enter the University of North Carolina in the fall of 1959. Julia Oliver is from Savannah, Georgia, and is a Sigma. This year Julia serves as Vice-President of the Student Body and is a member of Hall and Honor Council. She is on the Altar Guild, a member of the choir, and is an office assistant. Sally Blackmon is from Colum bia, South Carolina, and is a Mu. Sally is serving this year as Secre tary of Honor Council. She is on the handbook Committee, a mem ber of the Altar Guild and choir, and is Art Editor of the Stage Coach. Sally plans to enter the University of South Carolina in the fall of 1959. The purpose of the Circle is to promote a spirit of cooperation among the students by the cultiva tion of high ideals of service, fel lowship, citizenship, and scholar ship and to assist new students in finding their places in school life and its activities. The Circle above all symbolizes unity among the students. “Madwoman Of Chaillot” Receives Acclaim The night before Thanksgiving vacation some very talented St. Alary’s girls and State and Raleigh boys presented the play “The Alad- woman of Chaillot.” The acting of each person in the play is certainly worth special comment, but every one agrees that ARcky Rothrock really did a “top notch” job. The scenery, taken care of by the Art Department at St. Alary’s, was fabulous. The scene in the madwoman’s basement rated a special handclap which it receiv ed from the very appreciative audi ence.
