£.E^..^E3 OF ST. MARY’S FEBRUARY 12, I960 Our Thanks For Easter The students of St. Alary’s want to express their sincere apprecia tion to the faculty and Dr. Stone for giving us the opportunity to spend the major portion of Holy Week with our families in our homes. We feel that we are fortunate to have an administration that will consider our thoughts and requests and take the action, after careful deliberation, which it feels will be most beneficial and advantageous to the student body. Tradition is one of the most cherished aspects of St. Mary’s which the students enjoy; however, when the need to alter an accustomed jiat- tein arises, the student body maintains the right to express their convic tions on the matter to a sympathetic administration. To abuse this right would not be justifiable. The period of time which we have been given should be spent in quiet meditation on the days ]ireceding Easter Day and in happy rejoicing on Sunday, the climax of Holy Week. This is a period of self-examination, a time of realization and improvement of the many failings which we all share. The occasion has been given us to execute this enrichment of oui spiiitual lives with those with whom we are most intimate—our families. For this we are extremely grateful. Committee Studies Constitution The Constitution Committee, composed of tlie Vice-President of tlie Student Government, three or more students appointed by the President of the Student Govern ment, and two faculty members a]i- pointed by the President of the school, studies the Constitution and suggests possible changes which are presented to the Legislative Body. Alembers of this committee for the present school year are Ann Hauser, chairman; Polly Fulker son; Beverly Bunn; Patsy Frank; Bea Foote; and Mrs. .John Cell and Miss Edith Richardson. The committee is working with the changes suggested by the Elec tions Committee. One of these changes presented is to elect the Chairman of Legislative Body by the student body in the spring. The Committee is also consider ing and studiying a petition drawn U]) by the sophomores. The sopho mores would like to have one more representative to the Legislative Body than they now have. This increase means the class would then have the president and two representatives to the I^egislative Body. After the Committee has made definite decisions, these decisions will be presented to the Legislative Body, and if approved, they will be referred to Dr. Stone for final approval. The work of the Consti tutional Committee must be com pleted and submitted to the Legis lative Body no later than five weeks before Commencement. Letter Club Gives Program The beatniks of “Pooped Lloyd’s Pad” bopped and jived for the stu dent body in an assembly at the first of .January. Talents were dis- played in many ways. Some Letter Club members entertained the “au dience” with their unusual and unique poems on “blobs,” “birdies” and H^O, while the other members accompanied these talented poets on their “beat” instruments. The “ivory keyboard” was kept bounc- iiig iw tlie talented fingers of “Bird” Roberson. Dining Room Committee Begins Plans The Dining Room Committee, which was organized in the fall, consists of Bea Foote, chairman; Alargaret Alidget, junior represen tative; Betsy Nickels, sopnomore representative; and Sally Quillan, freshman rej)resentative. The committee has been divided into three groups. The first one is concerned with the appearance of the students at meals. The second group is to handle the suggestions and food in general. The attitude of the waiters and waitresses to ward the students and vise-versa is the main concern of the third group. The purj)ose of this committee is to act as a means for the students to convey their ideas on the dining room system to the administration. The committee plans to put a sug gestion box in the basement of Smedes in the near future for the students to use. It is asked that all suggestions be signed so that any idea may be discussed by the coimnittee and the student origin ating the idea. It is hoped that, if this commit tee is a success, there will be a number of such committees form ed to discuss all phases of campus life. Classes Try To Raise Money With the beginning of second semester classes the freshmen, sophomores, and seniors resumed their class projects. The freshmen will be selling hot dogs after study hall on Tuesday and Thursday nights; the sophomores will be sel ling sandwiches at eleven o’clock on Friday nights and at eleven and twelve o’clock on Saturday nights; the seniors will be operating the Ihttle Store as usual. The juniors sold St. Mary’s ash trays during first semester, and this semester they plan to have a “White Elej)hant Sale.” Because of the unusual nature of this sale, the juniors wish to wait to explain in assembly, at which time the date will also be announced.
