Classes Elect New Officers
(’lass olHcers (from left to right) are: Betsy Crutchfield, Anne McKinney,
Gretchen Bullard and (seated) Sally Stevens.
On October 3, 1961, the regular
Tuesday assembly program was re
placed by the election of class of
ficers Each class went to a pre
determined place in order to vote
for the class president and honor
council representatives. 'Die nomi
nations for these two offices had
been given to Cornelia Hums,
school president, and then to Dr.
^tone for approval. Nominations
for any other offices voted upon
were taken from the floor. _
Sally Stevens, an old girl, was
elected by her classmates as the
new president of the junior class.
Reide Watson and Lib Rawlings,
two new girls, have in a short time
earned enough respect to have been
elected the honor council repre
sentatives for the junior class
The sophomore class elected as
their new president, Anne McKin-
nev Anne has proved herself a very
capable leader. She is also president
of the Beacon, and Vice President
of the yiu’s. Along with the fresh
man class, the sophomores elected
as their honor council representa
tive Betty Gayle Sanford. Betty
Gayle’s fine personal qualities have
made her an attribute not only to
the sophomore class but to the
whole school. The other officers
elected by the sophomore class were
Cathy Chandler, legislative body
representative, and Sharon Finch,
vice-president.
The freshman class elected Gret
chen Bullard to serve as this year’s
president, Susan Spalding, vice-
president, and Winborne Shaffer,
legislative body representative,
were the other officers elected Tues
day.
The commercial class chose Bet
sy Crutchfield, president; Elsie Ot
to, honor council representative;
and Linda Parker, vice-president.
With all these fine leaders to
guide us and with all the support
of the student body, this should be
a very successful year in the his
tory of St. Alary’s.

Clubs Begin
Activities
Alany of the clubs at St. Mary’s
have already begun functioning.
Choir and Glee Club try outs have
already been held, and from all re
ports, the musical clubs of St.
Mary’s will be providing some ex
cellent talent as the year pro
gresses.
Bee Pitt, editor of the Stage
coach, is adding members to her
staff and is well on her way in
producing the best annual yet. Ann
Niemeyer, editor of the Belles, is
excited over what looks now as if
it will be a large and hard working
staff. The Muse staff, headed by
Alary Jane Deadwyler, will be
composed of any literary-minded
girls. Their efforts are certainly en
joyed by the rest of the students
when the Muse is published in the
spring.
The Canterbury Club and the
Y.W.C.A. got off to a big start by
having the traditional “first Sun
day night” picnic in the gym. It
certainly seems that both groups
have many interesting events plan
ned for the coming school year.
The Letter Club held the annual
Sigma-AIu rally in the gym on Sep-
tenaber 27. The new girls learned
which club they belonged to, went
to the gym where the cheerleaders
led their groups in some cheers, the
captains of each team were in
troduced, and refreshments were
served. An added attraction for the
old girls was a visit from Miss
Lloyd, a gym instructor who left
St. Alary’s last spring. The mem
bers of the Letter club, under the
guidance of president Carol Hardy
and Miss Lou Jones, are in hop4
that all students will participate
actively in all athletic events.
The Young Democrats and the
Young Republicans have met with
large attendance and elected their
officers. Gee Canada is president of
the Y.D.C. and Mary Larsen is
president of the Y.R.C.
The Dramatics Club, with its
newly elected president, Nanne
Chalgren, has decided on the first
play of the season, Annie Get Your
Gun, and is already beginning to
w’ork on it.
The members of the Altar Guild
have met wuth their advisor. Miss
Bason, and duties have been as
signed to the girls. We owe them
praise for keeping our beloved
chapel properly prepared for all
occasions.
