T I 5; BELLES OP ST. MARY’S December 1, 1961 St. Mary’sLoses Loving Friend St. Mary’s was saddened recently by the death of Miss Mary Lewis Sasser who has been an integral part of the school for almost thirty-eight years. Miss Sasser was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and attended school there. After completing her schooling at Greens boro College, Miss Sasser came to St. Mary’s in 1923. Here at St. Mary’s Aliss Sasser carried out the duties handled by the treasurer of the school. When she first came, she assisted Mr. A. W. Tucker who was the Business Manager of the school. In recent years she had taken over most of the financial duties of the school, includ ing that of assistant to Air. Guess, who is secretary to the board of trustees. In the words of our own Dr. Stone, “Miss Sasser was the most accurate and one of the most faithful people I have ever known, I had great confidence in any report that she completed and all records were in perfect order at all times. She gave valuable assistance and counsel to the faculty and staff regarding pension plans, health policies, and other problems.” During the past two years Aliss Sasser, although in declining health, was unwilling to give up her work at St. Alary’s. In the death of Aliss Alary Lewis Sasser St. Alary’s has lost more than a loyal and efficient treasurer; she has lost a loving friend. Develop Your Potential V1HIC.H Qtac ftBE. vouL? Students Discuss Study Habits At the end of a quarter grading period, St. Alary’s students wander about the campus with frowns of worry puckering their foreheads. Why this worry? Why the frowns? Revealing the answers to these questions are the following opin ions, given in answer to the query; “What do you think of the study habits of St. Alary’s students in general?” Gail Murphey: “I couldn’t study the way some students do, but I believe my study habits are the right ones for me. I don’t always go by my study schedule, but it’s there as a reminder.” Jennie Aloore: “I think we waste too much time in the afternoons, and then have too much to do at night.” The two month’s wait for the Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone. During this wait, many of us have accomplished what amounts to only marking time. For many girls, the most important result of the first quarter was that of making new friends and discovering the social benefits' of St. Mary’s. Alary Frances Stanton; “I don’t really think there’s an I-don’t-care attitude here. But many people just study superficially. And a lot of us new juniors just out of high school haven’t acquired proper study habits yet.” Now the new quarter has begun. The so-called period of adjustment is over, and it is time for us to put our best foot forward in another endeavor — a more serious one — that of availing ourselves of the scholastic opportunity here at St. Mary’s. Dianne Croonenberghs; “People wait until the last minute to do things and don’t have their work organized. This I know from ex perience.” Alartha Fowler; “I find it hard to concentrate around girls I like to talk to.” The importance of schooling is not to warp a person in some way or other, but rather to offer a varied program that will produce a well- rounded individual, capable of assuming the responsibilities jif-adulfchtiod with a sense of self-satisfaction. Potential means nothing when it is not developed and used to the fullest. Acceptance here at St. Mary’s is a sign that each girl has the potential and that she should not ignore this fact. In only a short while, we will face stark reality in the form of examinations. Unless something is done now, the unretractable time spent during the first semester will be considered a waste and a loss. Rosanne Hollis; “Everybody has good intentions, but people just haven’t learned to study properly yet. And sometimes I think we don’t know what’s expected of us by different teachers.” Prevention of such a loss will require a little extra concentration and effort, painful at first, but habit-forming. Try it! Helen Thackston; “Its not the fact that the study habits are really poor. It’s just that people haven’t learned how to go about studying here. And better co-operation on the halls would lead to better con centration.” Sherry Kinney; “We’re trjung, we’re failing, and we don’t under stand. But we haven’t given up yet.” Alary Tankard; “Everybody’s trying, but we still have a long way to go.” Dianne Alagruder; “I just don’t understand. I just wish somebody would explain things to me.” THE BELLES OF ST. MARY’S Published every two weeks during i the school year by the student body of St. Mary’s .Tunior College.
