The Beacon, the honorary society
for freshmen and sophomores, walk
ed on Wednesday night, December
2. The principle purposes of this
organization are to promote high
ideals, school spirit, co-operation, and
participation in extracurricular ac
tivities among the high school stu
dents at St. Mary’s. Being primarily
a service organization, the Beacon
entertains several projects during the
year. Along with the annual Christ
mas party, which is given jointly by
the Ileacon and the Circle, a tra
ditional project of the Beacon has
been the sale of decals and letter
stickers. One of the main services
rendered by the Beacon has been
doing volunteer work at Wake
County Hospital. Later this year
the Beacon plans to sell popcorn.
The new members, who were in
ducted on Wednesday night, are
Janet Winston Bowers, Paula Leigh
Simpson, and Charlotte Camp Smith.
Janet Bowers from Jackson, North

Saturday night, January 9, has
been scheduled as the beginning
date for a movie series which will
feature full - length entertainment
films. This project is being sponsored
by the college and will be continued
as long as an adequate number of
students show their interest by at
tending the films.
Many people on campus have been
concerned over tbe total lack of on-
campus entertainment provided for
the students, and it was felt that a
movie series might interest those stu
dents with dates as well as those who
have no plans for the evening. The
features will be shown at either 7:00
or 7:30 p.m. in order that those girls
with dates may have time to leave
campus afterwards.
In order to make the showing as
enjoyable as possible, a new screen
will be permanently installed in the
auditorium. In contrast to the present
screen which is seven feet by nine
feet, the new screen will measure
twelve feet by twenty feet. This in
crease in screen size and the use of
two projectors in order to prevent
any break between the reels will
make the showing as near like a
commercial showing as possible.
The selection of the features will
be handled by a student committee
working with Miss Nichols. Con
tracts have been signed with five
large film libraries: this large number
sources will give a greater oppor-
unity for obtaining top-quality en-
ertainment and the most recent
films that have been converted to six-
pen millimeter film. Suggestions
for particular films will be welcomed
from all students, and the Selection
Committee will consider each one
carefully.
n Films will be scheduled approxi-
Lu- mately two weeks apart, and each
Kin- feature will be announced as soon as
the order is confirmed by the furn-
^ ishing film library. There will be an
admission charge of twenty-five (25)
cents per person: this small amount
will permit the renting of better and
more expensive films. This series will
involve considerable expense for the
college and is being initiated purely
for the student's enjoyment. There
fore, the first several showings will
be on a trial basis, and the success of
these will determine the continua
tion of the series.
