K he jiew staff members ■y’s is Miss Mary Lon academic counselor, ‘ acts as an advisor if ‘Uis concerning grades C- She keeps records of ades and is in charge STUDENTS GIVEN A VOICE AND A VOTE IN ADMINISTRATION POLICIES During the first week of school, Mr. Pisani announced his plans for student representation on thir teen committees that had previ ously been composed only of fac ulty or board members. Nine com mittees were limited to seniors, but four were open to all stu dents. Lists were posted and all interested and qualified were en couraged to sign up. Out of the 470 members of the student body, 150 girls did sign. Faculty mem bers and student government of ficers assisted Mr. Pisani in plac ing everj' student who had signed the lists and was not on Academic Probation on a committee. Since all committees must have a major ity of faculty members, several committees were limited to a small number of students. A new committee for the selec tion of an Academic Dean is head ed by Dr. Penick, a board mem ber. The committee members will establish the duties of an Aca demic Dean and then will begin to find the person to fill the posi tion. The Dean will serve as an assistant to Mr. Pisani and will especially work with the' heads of the acedemic departments. Mr. Baird is the chairman of the Chapel committee. The members will discuss plans for more mean ingful chapel services. They will also study the controversial ques tion of compulsory chapel. The Catalog committee has al ready begun work on updating and improving the St. Mary’s Catalog. Mrs. Gunn is chairman of this committee. Mrs. Brown is the chairman of the Library committee which will work to provide the students with a well-equipped, modern library. The Publicity committee is one of the larger committees and is supervised by Miss Haig. Members will be asked to write articles for the newspapers and perhaps to de sign pamphlets to be sent to alum nae. Dr. Morrison is chairman of the Lectures and Concerts committee which will try to bring interest ing and cultural programs to the students. Miss Richardson, Dean of Stu dents, is chairman of the Hospi tality committee. The class voted on Sep tember 29, and the winners were announced at a special assembly that night at 6:30. The officers will organize the class in its plans for several parties, assem blies, and the senior dinner at the Angus Barn. This year the seniors will sell UNICEF Christ mas cards as a class project. Beth Denning of Benson, N. C., was elected vice-president. An old girl, Beth served as treasurer of her sophomore class and was a member of the Beacon. She is now a member of the Grand daughters’, Dramatics, and Span ish clubs and is a counselor on 2nd Cruik. Beth Coltraiie of Madison, 1969-70 OFFICERS N. C., was elected secretary. She is on the news staff of the BELLES and is a member of the Granddaughters’ club. Beth is also a counselor on 3rd Holt. Jennie Wiggins, a Wilson, N. C. native, was elected treas urer. She was in the Dramatics club last year and also worked on the STAGECOACH staff. Jenny is a counselor on 2nd Middle Smedes. Laura Saunders, a native of Plymouth, N. C., was elected dance marshal. She is a member of the Granddaughters’, Drama tics, and Spanish clubs. Last year she served on the STAGECOACH staff and was a member of the YDC.
