A BACKPACK TRIP
Another girl sold a “fun-filled weekend of
' boating, skiing and horseback riding” for three.
Other Freshmen sold themselves to clean rooms
teach tennis lessons, and do laundry. Several
day students will act as chauffers and serve
dinners, while some teacher will give ha
parties. All freshmen were asked to sell -the
selves or pay a $5.00 fine.
“All in all, the slave sale was a very suc
cessful venture on the part of the Freshman
Class,” states class president Melinda Byrd^ It
looks as if we easily cleared $800 rn profits,
re adds. Melinda explains that the flu epr-
7emic reduced the turnout and thus cut down
on the money earned. However, she feels tl^a
the profits will be ample to cover expenses
the Freshman-Sophomore dance.
A backpack trip is being planned for the
weekend March 3-4-5 !! This is the weekend
which begins Spring Break. We plan to leave
St. Mary’s at about 8:00 A.M. on Saturday,
March 3rd, and return to the school at about
6:00 P.M. on Monday, March 5th. There’s
some five hours of driving each way, and maybe
three hours of “packing in” on foot (the same
coming out), to a place called Cantrell’s Creek
Lodge in the Pisgah National Forest just North
of the town of Brevard. We’ll be there all day
Sunday, so bring a camera, some fishing gear,
or whatever you like to do in the woods. The
trip is limited to ten club members, so sign up
early! (if more cars become available later, it
can be expanded).
Each individual will be responsible for cloth
ing, sleeping gear, and personal items. The club
will assess members going to pay for food, and
the food load will be distributed among all
packs. There will be a supper/meeting on
Wednesday, February 7th at 5:00 P.M. to plan
details of equipment and determine who’s go
ing. BE THERE! You’ll need the attached
forms, completed, to go, so start on them as
quickly as possible.
Equipment check-off lists will be distributed
later. In general, you’ll need boots, a pack,
sleeping bag, cooking gear, eating gear, proper
clothing (it’s cold in the mountains in early
Spring), and whatever miscellaneous items you
feel are worth carrying for three hours.
Happy Valentine's Day!
