1974-75 SGA Officers Elected * _ ^ -r 1 riTL, -nfv by Mary Dombalis As the school year draws closer to an end, the new Stu dent Government Association officers are already working hard for the betterment of the school. These girls — Margaret McAlister, Martha Kelly, Sus- anne Owens, Paige Ward, Lynn Harand, and June Upchurch were installed on April 3, 1974. Their goals and aspirations vary, but the girls all share one common desire — to serve the school. In the next year, they must be willing to give unself ishly of their time, talents, and ideas. They will face trying times, but hopefully the reward ing experience will outweigh the demanding duties. Margaret McAlister is the 1974-197B President of the Stu dent Government. Margaret was treasurer of her freshman class and vice-president of her sopho more class. As President of the SGA, she will be Chairman of Honor Board. In addition, she will serve on Social Board and Legislative Body. Next year, Margaret would like to see the faculty and stu dents become more involved with one another. Margaret also stated, “I want to familiarize all the students with the St. Mary’s Constitution.” She also hopes to bring back old tradi tions to the school. Martha Kelly is the new Chairman of Social Board. Her duties are not altogether new since Martha served on Social Board her sophomore year. In addition to her duties on Social Board, Martha also serves as Chairman of Hall Council. Martha said, “The SGA offi cers this year have done such an outstanding job, and I hope that next year will prove to be as successful as this one has been.” Martha added, “We all need the support of the school; without it the Student Govern ment could not function. The new Secretary of the SGA is Paige Ward. Paige will serve as Secretary to the Honor Board. The new Vice-President of the SGA, Susanne Owens, is not a novice in the area of Student Government either. Susanne was president of both her freshman and sophomore classes, and presently serves as one of the junior representatives on Hon or Board. As Vice-President, she will be Chairman of Legislative Body. Susanne will also serve on Honor Board and Social Board. One of Susanne’s primary goals for next year is “to main tain and promote the present school spirit.” She would also like to see the students involv ed in more activities on campus. Paige would like to “bring all of the classes together.” Paige also stated, “I want to make every student aware of her re sponsibility to uphold the Honor System.” Lynn Harand is the 1974-75 Secretary of Social Board. She will also be in charge of Minor Offense meetings. Lynn hopes “to leave behind with the other girls the realization of what a rare privilege it is to live in this great atmosphere of love and spirit at St. Mary’s.” The President of the Day Students for next year is June Upchurch. June will also serve on Social Board. Her main goal as an SGA officer is “to bring the Day Students closer togeth er so that in turn they can be- by Laura Fanjoy The High School Honor So ciety held a very special assem bly Wednesday, March 27, during which tiro new member^ Leslie Stokes and Valerie Tullai, were inducted. All the old Hon or Society members wore long blue robes and assembled in a semi-circle - to receive the neiff members. Leslie and Val were each presented a red rose and then robed by - old members. Finally; both girls took the Hon or Society oath and became official members of the organ ization. Also, during the assembly, five new sophomores were reCr ognized for maintaining a high grade average. The constitution states that to be eligible for membership a girl must main tain a 3.5 grade average and be at St. Mary's for at least one year. The new sophomores, not having been at St. Mary’s for one year already, were not eli gible for official membership- But, the Honor Society felt that because these girls had main tained the required grade aver age, they should be recognized. Rebecca Blackburn, Beth Hahft Cindy Royal, Jeanne Watford, and Sharon Weers were recog nized and presented with white carnations. The High School Honor So ciety has been a very active organization at St. Mary’s th^ year. 'The girls have worked hard on several different proj ects. With the money earned, four new books have been pur chased for the library. Also, at graduation, there will be a boot presented to the girl who has most improved her grades over a two-year period at St. Mary’S- The Honor Society Schol^' ship Fund has been greatly in creased thanks to contributions from students and faculty. Ar proximately $200 has been added to the fund which will be used in the future to enable some gir* to come to St. Mary’s who i^ not financially able to do so. ^ great deal of thanks is extend ed from all the Honor Society members to those who helped in this project. It would sound even better though, if Bud was still going to be here to serve us. For financial reasons, St. Mary’s is switching from Saga Food Service to Slater. Al though the present cafeteria “HELLO, BUD’S CAFE” ... A favorite man about campus. Bud Watkins, is seen busy, as usual. Bud will be leaving St. Mary’s due to a food service change. situation has proved more than , satisfactory, the school will be able to save several thousand dollars by making the change. Don’t worry, though — A cheap er service will definitely not mean worse food. Slater Food Service simply has the advant age of having its own meat packing plant in Greensboro. Meat, therefore, is much cheap er for this food service than for Saga. Slater will be able to provide us gourmets with such extras as a continental breakfast, fresh fruit, dietetic foods, and smushy ice-cream — you know, out of a machine. Let’s just hope that along with these luxuries, we will also be served with friend liness, and genuine affection, as Saga has done for twelve years. Bud Watkins, who has been with us since Christmas of last year, said; “I’ve enjoyed it here very, very much. I’ve worked at a lot of colleges; this has been the best by far. The ad ministration is great, and the student body is so, so nice. “I’ve spent a wonderful year- and-a-half here, but I feel that the change made by Mr. Con rad (of the Finance Committee) was for the best. We all respect what was a fair, sensible busi ness decision. We all regret leaving, but we are happy about the time we’ve spent here.” Commented Clementine Pear son, one of our great cooks, “we have a lot of fun, and I especially loved the Halloween party — you know, those car toon characters, monsters, and everything. All the workers here are great; we have a good time.” What James Medlin, another of our chefs, liked best was Suppressed Desire Day. “I died laughing just watching y’all come through the line.” One of the best student work ers in the cafe is Kitty Grims- ley. “The staff we have now is great, and all the student wofl^^' ers are good. And next r>c people’ll realize that Sag 1 j wasn’t bad at all; but Slate according to their contract, rhc be good, too.” . j 4c Two more members of '^ | ] staff to whom we owe^ Stall w w**v*«* ^ ! thanks are John Townsend » Sf Mary Smith. - And. oh yes, what ^ have done without our 1 : lady,” Mary Sciabarasi; has been here for f«ve--and- ^ half ? “It has been so nice ^ coming a part of St. Mary s> much that I’d like to stay ; there is a place available .W me. Also, I’m really f forward to seeing my ^ ^ Susan here as a freshman i this fall.” >jfe [ As we will miss the jf? sUff — their cooking, » vf parties for us, their hard i over the years; but most o j j we will miss their wonde^^^i attitudes and their perpe smiles.
