INTRAMVRALS SYSTEIU REVISED
There’s something new at
St. Mary’s this year-a new
intramural sports program
which was developed by Miss
Mary Lida Alexander. In this
new intramural system, the
Sigmas and Mus of past years
will be replaced by dorm
teams competing, dorm
against dorm, for the campus
championships. Each dorm
section, or team, will have a
representative who will be the
important link between the
Intramural Council and the
students. The intramural
council will meet once a
month, and the represen
tatives will keep their teams
informed about all of the in
tramural activities. In ad
dition, the representatives
will be responsible for
organizing their teams for
each sport and arranging
meetings and practices when
necessary.
There will be team sports
and individual sports involved
in this year’s program. Two
leagues of 5 teams each will
compete in such sports as
volleyball, basketball, and
softball. Competition will be in

themselves and for their
teams by participating in
tennis, badminton, table
tennis, and spades.
Any individual who ac
cumulates 200 points or more
during intramural play will
receive recognition for par

the form of a certificate
presented by Miss Alexander.
Miss Alexander is here
“excited and enthusiastic
about our new intramural
program. Dorm and Class
rivalry should add excitement
and fun to playing intramural
sports,’’ she adds that,
“Playing a sport does not
have to be a full time thing,’’
and urges all interested girls
to “Come and enjoy the fun of
playing once a month or every
week.”
“It’s up to you but please
let’s get our new program off
to a good start with a lot of
participation and en
thusiasm,” reemphasizes
Miss Alexander.
Special Thanks
Dear Friends,
I want to thank those girls
of St. Mary’s for all of the door
holding and book carrying
they did for me; and figuri^ a
letter in “The Belles” would
be the best way to do it.
The day I left to come to
St. Mary’s I had a cast put on
my leg due to pulled ligaments
in my ankle. I knew it wasn’t
going to be easy adjusting to a
new environment and this was
going to make it even harder,
so I thought.
It only took a few days to
learn I was wrong. Everyone
was as kind and helpful as
thev could be. This school
truly has the best student
body around.
So, to all of you who
helped me by carrying bo^s,
getting my meals or holding
the door for me. Thanks a lot!
See ya,
Sheila Duffee

Ambassadors
Enjoy Trips
by Laurie Little
This summer two high
school students. Lea Patton
and Bonnie Petree,
represented St. Mary’s as
American Ambassadors to
Greece and Ireland,
respectively. Each girl was
chosen last spring to receive a
$500 scholarship for a sbc week
stay in a forei^ country. Lea
Patton went through a three
day orientation in Vermont
before embarking on her trip.
She spent her first four weeks
in Avlida, Greece (near
Athens) with the Vaianis
family. The vUlage is located
on the Agean Sea and Lea
enjoyed sun bathing on the
beach. After her stay with the
Vaianis’ family. Lea joined a
touring group of 12 and spent
two weeks visiting Sparta,
Delphi and Olympia, She
enjoyed seeing the ruins and
historic cities and visiting the
Greek Islands. She par
ticularly enjoyed shopping in
Greece. Among her purchases
were a ring, an afghan and a
pair of Espadrilles. For the
most part. Lea found the
Greek people “warm, open
and hospitable;” however,
she discovered the Greek
“guys” went a little over
board in their efforts to
display their friendliness.
Bonnie Petree lived with
the Davis family on Birr,
Ireland for four weeks. Birr is
near the center of Ireland and
Bonnie enjoyed being “about
an hour and a half from
everything.” After getting to
know the Irish people, Bonnie
found them to be friendly and
fun loving. She joined her
“family” each night at
Enright’s Tavern where she
found that the Irish enjoy
listening to the Eagles, the
Beatles and country-western
music. She discovered that
slang words can carry dif
ferent meanings in different
countries. When she asked if
anyone knew how to “shag”
she received several sur
prised looks. After her stay
with the Davis’s, Bonnie spent
a week of touring. She then
took a barge trip down the
River Shannon and rode
horses through a mountain
gap. She also found that the
young men were extremely
friendly.
Both girls emphasized the
excitement of new ex
periences and the hospitality
of the people they met and the
families who took them in.
