PAGE 2 the belles MARCH 4, 1983 EDITORIAL To Err is Human, But to Make Mistakes is Downright Stupid Two weeks ago two other girls and I faced President Rice waiting for the verdict: we had made a mistake, and now we had ^remember the night I forgot to sign out. I didn t leave campus until 12:30 or so and I was ready to get out. And get out I did without signing out. It was an honest mistake, but a mistake nevertheless. I had the right to SDH, but I didn’t follow the rules. What is a mistake? The Thorndike-Barnhart Dictionary defines it as “error in action, thought or judgement.” That night I definitely mastered all three. j n t When I got back on campus, after the famous fire drill, 1 remembered I had not signed out when I tried to sign in. Uh, Oh ” I thought “This spells “TROUBLE.” Well, the three of us, facing Pres. Rice 2 days later didn’t have to look up the meaning of that word. , , . j He was rather nice, and sympathetic as he explained our positions on campus and exactly why we were being punished so harshly. “It isn’t fair,” I thought, to have to pay this price for leadership. „ , . i „ I still didn’t think it was fair until I called my parents long distance. My parents, however, agreed with Pres. Rice and ex plained that in two years, when I made a “mistake” in a large corporation, I wouldn’t be “campused” and put on “probation. I would be without a job. So remembering that we are supposed to learn something now everyday, I wrote this one down as a lesson that will stay with me for the rest of my life. The time to stop making mistakes is now To err is human, but to make mistakes is downright stupid. M.G.B. Letter to theEditor Dear Editor, It seems that every time we turn on the T.V., the stereo, or even pick up a newspaper, we are confronted with the new drinking legislation. It has almost become a nuisance. I am all for suffer penalties for convicted drunk drivers, but I feel that the issue of drinking and driving has become so heated that legislators are losing sight of the real issue. I feel that a lot of useless bills are being seriously considered. North Carolina is now considering raising the drinking age to ninet^n. This will “supposedly” help keep beer and wine out of the high schools. I am from Virginia. It never seemed to affect me. If I wanted beer, I could always get it. I also talked to a number of my friends and they didn’t feel that it affected them in any way either. I feel tot the time and money put into this bill could be used for something more constructive. It could be used for drinking awareness programs in high schools or for drinking rehabilitation programs. Basically, I think legislators need to be realistic about their goals and concentrate on bills that will have a real effect on the problem of drunk driving.
