St. Mary’s College adds
several new faculty members

ThefB are a number of additions to the
St. Mary’s facuity and administration this
year.
There are severai new faces in ad
ministrative positions at St. Mary’s. Dr.
Martha Smith is the new head iibrarian.
She grew up in Jacksonviiie, Fia. and now
iives in Raieigh with her daughter. She
attended Duke University where she ob
tained her B.A. degree in History. She
earned her M.Div. at the Duke Divinity
Schooi, and then she got her M.S.L.S.
(Master of Library Scienc) and her PhD. in
Reiigion at UNC-CH. She was the head
iibrarian and taught reiigion at North
Caroiina Wesieyan Coiiege in Rocky
Mount before coming to St. Mary’s.
A returning face is Sue Osborne from
independence, Va., the high schooi
residence counseior for the freshmen on
third Smedes. Ms. Osborne was here at St.
Mary’s as a residence counseior the year
before iast. Last year she iived in West
Germany for severai nrxjnths and worked in
an educationai center in Wurzburg. She •
also toured seven countries while in
Europe. Ms. Osborne was graduated from
Radford University in Radford, Va. She has
also been involved with the
N.C.Legislature.
ALUMNAE
There are several additions to the
alumnae office this year. The director of
alumnae relations is Tad Wyman,
originally from Greenville, N.C. She has
lived In Raleigh for the past twenty years.
Mrs. Wyman was graduated from UNC-CH
in 1962 where she received her B.A.
degree. She has owned a retail lighting
shop In Raleigh and has been a member of
the staff of the Stewart Theatre at NCSU.
Mrs. Wyman Is the mother of two St.
Mary’s girls, Elizabeth who was graduated
last year and Hannah who is presently a
junior.
Jean Schaefer, Director of College
and Church relations, Is the daughter of a
1957 graduate of St. Mary’s. Ms. Schaefer
Was a very outstanding St. Mary’s girl. She
Was Valedictorian of her class and
Chairman of the Judicial Board, a member
of the Vestry, Muse staff, Phi Theta
^^pa, and the Circle. Ms. Schaefer
'delved her B.A. degree in English from
NCSU.
Jenny Herbert, the Director of Annual
Civing, is a native of Boston. She was
flf'aduated from the Connecticutt College
for Women In 1964 with a B.A. degree in
ofiamistry. Mrs. Herbert was a member of
f’hl Beta Kappa and Phi Sigma Honorary
Biology Society. She holds a Master's
^OQree In Biology from the University of
'^Irfllnla. She has two children and has
|®ught In Charlottesville, Va. and Hale
High School and Ravenscroft in Raleigh.
She Is also the Director of Admissions at
^^nscroft.
ADMINISTRATION
Conna Spurrier of Raleigh is the
®®^tary to the Director of Guidance. She
'^ffed for Mrs. Bunch at the end of last
year. Miss Spurrier was graduated from St.
Mary’s In 1982 and will be graduated from
NCSU in December with a B.A. degree In
Political Science. Kim Rackley Is the new
secretary to the Dean of the College. She
is originally from Oxford, N.C., and was
graduated from Peace Coliege. Miss
Rackley is also advisor for the yearbook.
Two new people have been added to
the Admissions staff. Beth Watkins is an
admissions counselor. She lives in
Raleigh and is a graduate of St. Mary’s.
Tracy Johnson of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, is
the new secretary to the Director of Ad
missions and Financial Aid. Mrs. Johnson
attended Indiana-Purdue University in Ft.
V\teyne and is now married and living in
Raleigh.
Also new to St. Mary’s is Mrs. Helen
Reid, the housekeeping receptionist. She
is originally from New York state, lived in
Rorida for 27 years, and has been living In
Raleigh for a month and a half.
St. Mary’s
welcomes
new chaplain

A very important part of St. Mary’s life
is chapel, and this year we have a new
person working in this area, Mr. Davis. He
Is not a stranger to our school, having
worked here until four years ago when he
left to pursue other interests.
Mr. Davis and his wife, Mrs. Davis,
came to their home parish in Henderson,
North Carolina. Mr. Davis was raised In an
episcopal church. His interest in religion
stems from his mother’s Bible teachings.
She also influenced his preference for St.
Mary’s because she graduated here in the
class of 1910. Mr. Davis went to the
Universityof North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
While he was going to school he met his
wife w.ho was at the time going to St.

FACULTY
There are a number of new people on
the faculty this year. Retumina to the
Music department is Mrs. Sharon Reed
who taught at St. Mary’s three years ago.
She is back teaching piano, organ and
music theory. Mrs. Reed got her
bachelor's degree at the Eastman School
of Music in Rochester, N.Y., and her
master's degree at UNC-CH. She owns a
vineyard and has a six month old little girl.
She has lived in Chapel Hill for the past
eight years, and she looks forward to
playing the new organ in the chapel.
Ms. Robanna Knott Is new in the P.E.
department this year. Ms. Knott teaches
physical fitness, lifesaving, and water
safety. She also works with the Sea Saints
and the swimming and diving teams. Ms.
Knott is originally from Texas. She lived In
eastern North Carolina and has been In
Raleigh 15 years. Ms. Knott attended Old
Dominion College In Norfolk, Va., for her
Bachelor's d^ree and NC^ for her
Master’s degree. Ms. Knott has worked
with Girl Scouts and volunteered with the
Red Cross; she also ran the pool at the
YMCA and taught swimming, boating, and

lifesaving.
Ms. Camille Bishop is a new member
of the math department. She teaches both
high school math and computer classes.
Ms. Bishop received her B.A. degree at
UNC-WilmIngton. She taught math at
Wilmington High School for five years.
She obtained her M.A. degree in Math
Education at NCSU. Ms. Bishop is very
involved with her church.
St. Mary’s has two new French
teachers this year. Dr. Lucy Melbourne of
Chapel Hill received her B.A. degree at
George Washington University in
Washington DC, and her PhD. from UNC-
CH. As a chiid Dr. Melbourne lived In
Switzerland, the Mid-East, Iraq, and Iran.
She has taught French and German at UNC
as an assistant and lectured In German at
George Washington University and George
Mason In Fairfax, Va. Mr. Fred Fladenmul-
ler who also teaches French, was bom in
France and attended high school and law
school there. He moved to the U.S. in 1972
and lived in Miami for four years^ He then
moved to Chapel Hill. He presently lives In
Raleigh. Mr. Fladenmullergot his Master’s
degree and his PhD at UNC-CH. He taught
French as a teaching assistant at UNC and
also taught French and Spanish at NCSU
for one year. He does publications in
French for the Continuing National
Research Center. He Is planning to write a
book on the study of literary types. Mr.
Fladenmulleralso does research for IBM.
He was the North Carolina coordinator of
an exchange program, the NACL. for 170
students and four teachers who went to
France.
Mrs. Margaret CShaughnessey is
new in the English department. She Is
originally from Macon, Ga. She attended
Vanderbilt University and then Duke
University for graduate school. Mrs.
CShaughnessey taught high school iri
Columbus, Ga., for t\wo years, high school
for five years in Durham, and for two years
at Duke. In addition, she has taught
aerobics for five years.
New in the Social Studies department
are Dr. Rebecca Bach and Mr. Giacomo
Cambino. Dr. Bach teaches Sociology and
Anthropology. She is from Albany, Indi
ana, and now lives in Durham. She at-
