THE BELLES
DECEMBER, 1984
DR. MILLER. . SUMMER SCHOOL
(Continued from Page 7)
Dr. Miller: Yes, it is true that
credit wiil not be accepted for
work on which the grade was
iess than “C”. Each college has
its own standards of quality and
St. Mary’s has standards which
are higher than those of many
schools. Our students and
alumnae are very proud of St.
Mary’s tradition of academic
excellence. It means a great
deal when applying to other
colleges for further study or for
a job.
Miss Payne: What do I have to
do to get your almighty permis
sion to take some dippy course
somewhere?
Dr. Miller: First, you should
consult with your advisor. You
should be able to come to some
conclusion about what courses
would be helpful to you In
attaining your academic goals:
This might be courses in a sub
ject which you are considering
as a major; for instance, educa
tion, business, oceanography,
law, etc. It might be to see if
you like the environment at a
particular college. It might be
appropriate to repeat a course
which you have failed or made a
very low grade. Your advisor
can be very helpful in discus
sing your goals and options
with you. Second, after talking
to your advisor, make an ap
pointment to talk to me. Bring
the catalog from the college
with you, if possible. If not, get
the specific course number and
catalog description of the
courses you want to take. If the
courses fall within the guide
lines of college policy, I will
write a letter to the college,
which will give you Visiting
Student status and the permis
sion to take the specific
courses. This letter is neces
sary in rrxjst cases before you
can enroll, so it is important
that it be sent early. The letter
will not only specify the
courses, but other conditions
such as the minimum grade
acceptable and the amount of
credit \Miich will be accepted.
You and the Registrar \«ill
receive a copy of this letter. It
is, in effect, your guarantee
from St. Mary’s that such work
will be accepted.
St. Mary's students, as well as the Raleigh community enjoy the annual "Lighting O’ the Green. ’
Miss Green: Really. Suppose I
take the course without your
permission, you know. What
happens then?
Dr. Miller: We will review the
work, but there is no guarantee
that the credit will be accepted.
Miss Ringer: Why? What could
go wrong?
Dr. Miller: Well, we have dis
cussed several possibilities:
that the course may be one that
is required at St. Mary’s, that
the college may not be ac-
redited, that the course may not
be of proper quality, that the
grade earned may not be high
enough; additionally, the
course may be a duplicate of
one already taken at St. Mary’s.
There are many pitfalls as
several unhappy students can
attest. Play it safe and get prior
approval.
Miss Payne: This school’s
bureaucracy and red tape is a
drag!
Miss Green: Really:
Miss Ringer: Yes, but better to
be safe than sorry. This ad
vising is what we pay for.
Miss Green: Really.
Because of an alleged male
volent force, there was a break
in the tape so that no further
conversation was recorded.
