Tennis Team is IViumphant at State Tournament By Danielle Little Staff Sports Writer The high school tennis team had a successful season. They finished 11-1 in the regular season. Their only loss was to Durham Academy, who they tied for the best conference record. Saint Mary's did well in the state tournament in Greensboro. Maiko Noda, who played number one on the team, was the tournament champion. She won the final match in the first flight claiming the title of best player in North Carolina independent schools. According to Coach Gammon, Maiko was the leader of the team. She never lost her determination and was always ready to play. In addition, Maiko was named PACIS player of the year. She and Ruth Hearn were named All Conference players. Ruth Hearn advanced to the semifinals in the fifth flight of the state tournament. Adrienne Stone and Emily McQueen were finalists in third flight doubles. Ruth Hearn and Holly Evans defeated the number one seeded doubles team in second flight doubles. Virginia Bullock, Holly Evans, and Emmye Taft lost in their first round singles matches. Hadley Watson was unable to participate in the tournament due to illness. The team finished sixth out of fifteen teams in the tournament. The team will lose seniors Virginia Bullock, Melissa Butler, Holly Evans, and Stephanie Phillips. Bullock and Evans have played in the top six for the past two years. They have been great assets to the team. Coach Gammon said, "The season was enjoyable, winning is always fun!" She was named coach of the year, making the year more memorable. Gammon hopes to expand the schedule next year to play more public high schools. Coach Dillon's Team is the "Most Coachable" He Has Ever Had! By Danielle Little Staff Sports Writer The 1993-94 high school basketball team began its season with a stunning start. The team defeated Hale High School in a scrimmage 52-16. Saint Mary’s also conquered O'Neal 70-11. The team was defeated by Friendship Academy 39-45. The Saints lost to Cardinal Gibbons 31-47. In a local tournament. Saint Mary's defeated The New Christian Academy 68- 38. The team defeated Hale High for the second time 54-35. Coach Dillon said this is the most coachable team he has ever had. He went on to say that the girls strive to meet all of the goals he sets. He referred to members as good team players and hard workers. These unselfish qualities cannot be taught. Dillon feels that the necessary skills will come, but the attitude has to come from within.
