S wimming Team Has Spirit By Mason Waites Shannon Gardner Jennifer Kulin The Saint Mary's swimming team has once again come alive. The coach, Kim Piontek, has worked extremely hard to bring the team back to SMC. The team attended the Pinecrest Invitational on Saturday January 15, and did very well. In this invitational, three girls from SMC placed fourth. Lyn Cvjetnicanin a twelfth grader came in fourth in breaststroke. Eleventh grader, Ashley Smith placed fourth swimming the butterfly. Rebecca Ward, also an eleventh grader, finished fourth in freestyle. Overall, The Saints placed fifth. Our team performed well considering other teams were composed of both girls and boys grades seven through twelve. The Saifits put a great deal of effort into their practices, which last two hours each day. During practices, the girls swim an average of 5000 yards. The girls have a lot of school spirit, and Miss Piontek believes that this will build the swim team up for many more years. The team encourages everyone to come and support them at their meets. It is easy to tell that swimming is hard work! Coach Dillon is Proud of His Hard Working Team Davis Dillon has taken an young, inexperienced group of basketball players and turned them into a team. The team is currently ranked 4th in the conference and Dillon believes they might pull off a third place ranking if they continue to improve at the rate tljey have. Tenth grader Jennifer Lewis is much improved as a substitute player according to Dillon. Becca George, Cameron Kirkland and Amy Macchiaverna are other substitutes who come on strong in the games. Forward Nancy Hill has been benched with a bad ankle and the flu reducing the options Dillon has to rotate his players in and out of the games. Margaret Taylor, Tracey Ivey, Emily Jenkins, Emily McQueen and Ruth Hearn continue to do a good job for the team. Despite their inexperience, Dillon still maintains they are the most coachable group he has ever had. Coach Dillon has absolutely transformed his team! You Heard????????
