h, ■» I SOUTHWIDl BAPTIST Page 16- Wbere Great Danger lurks. Male Help Wanted. Look Notice. Out in Edgar Co inty, Illinois, a farmer had his beard of cattle tested for tuberculosis. One cow reacted. Now the farmer thought he knew more about the value of tuberculin tests than the State inspector. He, thereupon, re moved the ear tag from his infect ed cow and, with seeming gener osity, presented her to his hired man for wages. There were seven children in the hired man’s family, his wife, a pig and a cat. All save two of the children, the farmer and his wife drank milk from the tuber culous cow. The five children, the pig and the cat have all con- ^ ticcted the disease. This seeming ly generous act of the farmer has thereby been responsible for in troducing into a poor family a disease which is highly infectious. li'. / i /11 be the indirect cause of a resulting death and be liable .to the charge of manslaughter. Authorities accept the fact now adays that tuberculosis may be communicated from cows to human beings; but human beings cannot give tuberculosis to cows There is little excuse for a thing of this kind to happen in * North Carolina as the National Government has appropriated $150,000 and the State Govern ment $15,000 and will each rein burse the farmer for one-third of the appraised value of tubercu lous cows which are, killed, pro vided the appraised value does not exceed a certain amount. But it mky happen and it behooves us t o look a gift cow in the mouth.
