the valedictory was mostly original,

What has been the harvest?
The clock tells me it is work time,
but in this concluding line, I wish I
might say something that would
help some one to a higher life, or
lead him to more zealous work in the
Master’s harvest. In these lines there
is a hearty hand clasp, for every
reader is my friend.

Are You A Reaper?
If I had time ! would write for
the Baptist every week, but, like
farmers boys in general, I am spend
ing my vacation in the harvest field
and between the plow handles. I
wonder what per cent of the readers
of the Baptist are farmers, or live on
a farm. I suppose very many of them
are farmers’ boys and girls. To those
who have been harvesting w’heat, 1
should like to say a word; for I love
to be in a field of ripe wheat; I like
to gather up the golden grain and
hind it into bundles; I love to hear
the ring and rattle of the scythe, and
smell the rich breath of the ripened
gram I love to lift my eyes toward
heaven and render thanks to the
Lord of harvests who “giveth ns all
things richly to enjo''.”
Then I think of the words of the
Maste''when he said, “Lift up your,
eyes, and look on the fields; for they
are wuite already to harvest.” There
is a vast harvest for Christian work
ers. All over the world sinners are
dying for the want of a saving knowl
edge of our Redeemer. “The harvest
is great, but the laborers are few.”
Just before I left school, during ,'x-
amination and commencement
weeks, I bad the opportunity of help-
iiig in a I’evival where this saying of
Jesus was manifestly true. “He that
reapeth receiveth wages, and gath-
ereth fruit unto'life eternal.” There
were sixty-eight conversions, and we
all rejoiced “together.” There was
such an outpouring of the Holy
Spirit as I have seldom witnessed.
The workers were a few earnest
schoolboys, and the place was a
country school-house.
Friend, there is some place where
God wants you to work. If ,oii don’t
know the place, let me give you a
t-ied rule, “Do the thing that is
next, and do it well.” Have large
plans and great faith. Don’t mind
difficulties, step on top of them. Make
them stepping stones to something
greater. Act as if everything depend
ed on you, and pray as if everything
depended on God. If yon are defeat
ed in one thing, ti-y something else.
