MOUNTAIN LIONS HIT BAD MID-SEASON SLUMP Lose Three Straights. ; 1 Phi’s took the lead in the inter- ^®3ty tilts by virtue of two defeats ^ed the leading Eu team. Both -•*es were hard fought and were ^ured by the accuracy of the Phi [rards. The two Phi team mates {led to be able to locate the ring Lli almost any angle, while the Eu's k unable to get to the hoop. ■elie first game ended with the Phi’s ■idling the big end of a 23-13 de- lt(|n. The next day saw them come i with renewed vigor and sweep a fighting but unorganized Eu r 1 to win a 27-9 verdict. Totts was the outstanding star of series. McClees also showed good for the winners. ihe only playing that deserved '^’Ition for the losers was the pass and general guarding of Allison, ti/d- ^y winning these two games the ^ s took a leg on the final decision, series is to be a three out five af- and the game Saturday night will ^*'trmine which route the series will :>ts he game will be played Saturday as the varsity is away on a trip tenoir-Rhyne. Dick Anderson will iate at the game. WHAT OTHERS DO AND SAY On the last road trip the Lions hit a slump after taking the first game with a terrific effort from Wofford. At Rutherford the team failed to get going and as a consequence dropped a fast one to Rutherford 31-36. The following night they were apparently riding under the same jinx and lost to Catawba 27-17. The worst was yet to come. On Saturday night, in the home gym, tne Asheville City College, sporting a fast, accurate team, swamped the locals by 58-18 count. The varsity put up a poor exhibi tion, and were never able to get going smoothly. Tony Thompson was having a great night of it, looping in 27 points, while all his teammates ran up neat individual scores. Mars Hill was forced on the defen sive early in the first half and never seriously threatened from then on. This week-end the Lions journey to Hickory to tackle the Lenoir Rhyne Mountain Bears. Coach Roberts has been putting the Lions through some stiff drill all week and indications are that they have about hit their stride again and upsets are in order. They will have to im prove if they expect to come out on top, however. ♦ * ♦ These campus games are exciting a lot of curiosity and interest, judg ing by the crowds and the interest of the players. To pick a winner would be impossible, especially in the society games. The Nons look good to me , I . , \ for the girls title and the Phi s are lOBhing the season with an unsullied , ... , • • u looking at the decision for the boys, -deferd because they have most of 1 tlr hard games behind, while the ikiington Generals are meeting the fest competition of any team in I conference. A soph says a waffle is a pancake with dimples, and another, who owns a flivver says a waffle is a nobby tread pancake. “But, re marked a co-ed, a waffle has its fine points, while a pancake is a complete flop.’’ RESTAURANT SIGNS “Try our Old Gold Soup—not a cough in a bowlful.’’ “If you can’t eat our steak try not to bend it; the next customer may have better teeth.’’ “Eat your soup—don’t kiss it.” SHOULD HAVE FREE TUITION F^resh F’red, the college freshman, while home for the holidays, said to his father: “Yes, dad, I know my studies are costing you a lot of money, and I can’t understand I don’t study much!” Patronize our advertisers. it. • 11 Thl b ol d a] ibid t.i ,1'ice ijrj irikj [ Icf Students and Friends of the College Watch Our Advert sing Colum's These firms and institutions are our friends, and are helping our paper. Believe in yourself. Do your work the best you know how and you will not be cheated—your efforts will bless all who come in touch with you.” —Emerson. * * * Because his wife makes $200 to $300 a week in poker games, Thomas Blondel, protested against paying her $100 a week alimony in a court at Chicago. The school was recently visited and inspected by Dean McCormick of the University of North Carolina Law School. * * A recent query for discussion at the last meeting of the Sigma Omi- cron Alpha Society at Salem College was: “Resolved, that women in the past decade have made more progress than in the preceeding decade.” The writer of this column contends that this query should be stated thus: “Resolved, that men havvi wash ed more dishes and scrubbed more floors in the past decade than in the preceeding thousand decades.” ♦ ♦ ♦ “Wit is a large slice of truth sprinkled with pepper; conversely, humor is a plateful of pepper garn ished with truth.”—High Life. * * * “Mary was a Chemist, But she’s ‘put out to sea’; For what she thought for old field dirt Was solid T-N-T.”—Chowanian. * * * We notice that at N. C. C. W. the girls have resorted to such forcible means as wheelbarrows. Recently, one of these species, probably a fresh man, was rolled calmly and uncere moniously across the main campus in said vehicle. There appears to be no answer to this action unless it is possible that truck farming has been instituted there. * * 5k “Who was Walt Whitman?” “If I’m not mistaken, I believe he was the gentleman who invented candy.”—The Log. 5fc 5k “I’m the Gink that delights in as sisting others in their affairs. I like to go from room to room and hear some new scandal. I enjoy spreading each bit of news and somehow, as it spreads, it grows. I am always so busy trying to find out what the other fellow’s doing that I don’t have time to do my own work. My line is gossip. I enjoy talking a- bout people even though it does cause me to lose friends each day. I like to spread abroad slighting re marks and if I can’t find much to tell, I get a great deal of pleasure out of making up little scandals. With all my talking, I evidently don’t say much for no one believes me. I never say anything face to face. But if you want any news spread just tell me for I’m the Gossiper Gink.” —Wingate triangle.
