They want to re gain their slim, girlish, figures before they reach the old home town. That just goes to prove that Christmas is coming. Of course, with all these new ways of playing the game, they are naturally interested in it for itself. There is nine court basketball and the game that teaches you to pass balls and then the regular sport with its twelve players. I can’t imagine why I am writing you about this but both basketball and Christmas are on my mind and maybe I could per suade you to forget the depression and pay us a visit. I don’t want many things and I am sure that you will give them to me. First, I want to have a Girl’s Athletic Association. Not the kind that is all wrapped up in tissue paper but one that is a Jack-in-the-Box and will jump up and do things. And then I would like a ball, and bat, and hikes, and you know how I love surprises!! You might stick in just a few. And Santa, I would like a whole lot more I>ep, “the good old-fashioned Mars Hill Pep.” Well Santa, please don’t forget me because I have been real good. I’ll be looking for you and I don’t like ashes and switches. Your distracted reporter, DOT TUTT. LIONS COMPLETE FOOTBALL SEASON Five Wins, Four Ties, And One Loss Turned In By Whelps; Fox Leads Scoring Lions Trim Candler In First Gage Go, 35-33 Game Won In Closing Seconds On Shots By Swann And Nettles A type of game that you often read about, but very seldom see, was battled to a 35 to 33 score as Coach Robert’s Mountain Lions eked out a victory over the fast stepping Candler All-Star crew. The Buncombe county team held a lead over Mars Hill from the opening whistle until the last thirty seconds of play, when Swann, Lion guard, sunk a field goal from the middle of the court, to put the two teams in a deadlock, and Nettles flipped in a fast one from under the goal to give the Mountain Lions the first game this season. One of the best aggregations to represent Mars Hill on the gridiron in several years, wound up their 1932 schedule when the Lions gave the Biltmore Bulldogs a 21-0 lacing in the annual Thanksgiving Day classic. By trampling the Bulldogs, this year’s team hung up one of the best records to be turned in by a Roberts machine in several seasons. Good Record This season’s summary shows five wins, four ties, and one defeat. The lone reverse score of the season was registered when Weaver’s Tornado took the Lions’ into camp for a 21 to 6 beating, on Armistice Day. Ac cording to available statistics, every other Mars Hill eleven has dropped at least two contests. The four deadlock games of the season with Belmont, Rutherford, Boiling Springs, and Lees McRae marred the average, but the wins over Wingate, Alumni, Asheville School, Cullowhee, and Biltmore proved the Lions claim to a fast and driving team. Fox Leads Scoring In registering the eighty-eight points of the season, all the backs showed a good deal of promise and ability. The scoring was led by Cap tain Fox with 25, and Jim Bethea with 21. The individual scores were: Fox 25 Rabb 11 Bethea 21 Hodges 7 Anderson 18 Nettles 6 The results of the season: Mars Hill 0—Belmont Abbey 0. Mars Hill 13—Wingate 6. Mars Hill 7—Alumni 0. THE LOWDOWN ON HIGHER SPORTS ;By FRANK WATSOh Say It With Flowers Well, old man football seems to have faded from the picture, but it doesn’t look like the gridiron has faded from the memory. We can still hear these Mars Hill drug store cow boys talking about Nettle’s sweeping end run. Pox’s ripping line plunge, Rabb’s drop-kick that tied the game, and all the rest of the pigskin chatter that goes with the crowd. But if the mind isn’t playing me wrong, local fans are soon going to be talking basketball throughout the whole day. After the exhibition against Candler All-Stars and seeing the stride that the cagers are hitting now, I believe that Mars Hill’s quint is going to be heard of outside the city limits. Coach Roberts is whip ping a fast team into shape, and it looks as if the aggregation is going to be one of the smallest teams in several years, but one with plenty of speed and good eyes for the basket. So far. Fox, Nettles, Lester, Moore, Swann, Robinson, W. Rabb, and Stroupe seem to be holding above the other candidates although there are some nice looking prospects listed on the scrub roster. Mars Hill is turning out some mighty good pugilists, although the school doesn’t back this fav orite sport. We notice where Val Edwards, former Mars Hill student, has walked away with the honors in the light-heavy class at Carolina. Edwards scrapped in the tournament staged by the university, and was listed as one of the best glove swingers on the program. Some good material and plenty of ex citement seem to be going to waste around the Hill. —From— ALLISON’S FLOWER SHOP Asheville, N. The C-II boys came out at the large end as the freshmen swallowed a 21 to 15 lacing at the hands of the upper classmen. Just a few games will be played in the intramural ranks before Christ mas, but the contests that are sched uled seem to be coming along nicely. A change has been made in the intramural league this season. Two leagues have been formed and sever al new teams admitted. Practically all the clubs have put a team in one of the two leagues, together with the classes, dormitories, town, and min isters. 4- CoviNGTON Sport -0— Everything for the Discriminating Sportsman -0- ASHEVILLE, N.
