Page Four THE HILLTOP, MARS HILL COLLEGE, MARS HILL, NORTH CAROLINA L BEHIND THE SCENES BY EUGENE BRISSIE Behind all scenes of accomplish ments, there are people who play very important parts, and quite often they are never recognized. If one could visit the scenes behind the actual make-up and printing of The Hilltop, it would be one of the most interesting ex periences to be had. The paper is printed by the Biltmore Press, of Asheville, and is set up, made up, and printed by a group of inter esting personalities. Let’s take a trip to the make-up and press room of the Biltmore Press. First we meet the foreman of the outfit, Dick Church, H.F., K.O., R.F.D., P.D.Q., and presi dent of his Sunday School class. A man of medium height, light hair, and a stocky build, L)ick is a prince of a good fellow, and be lieve it or not, he smiles most of the time. It is quite amusing to watch him sling a mass of slugs into a frame and then have a readable sheet in the end. He is a native of Virginia and smokes tobacco, (Old Golds). Next we come to a lanky guy who is as poker-faced as Joe Louis. Harry Hester is his name, although he is better known as “Screeno.” He is the linotype op erator, and under his job comer the translating of all type of copy and correcting mis-spelled words that are supposed to be spelled correctly. He has a line for every occasion. He once worked in De troit, but a cold wave sent him south where the weather suits his clothes. Last and with least hair, is th press operator, Edwin George Wright, (Esq.) Undoubtedly, he started his career as an ornery hombre of the Old West, but now he has tamed down to a pressman. He stands about 6 feet, 9 inches and is characterized by a whisker ed and rugged build. Although not as active as in former years, he is quite spry for his age and gets around very well. His asso ciates say that it takes a person half-nuts or balmy, to run a press and he’s one of the best of press men. These men take an interest in trying to make your paper look decent. Their positions are not only some of the most important places in journalism, but some of the most fascinating. So we salute a trio of fellow-workmen who have contributed a large portion to the success of The Hilltop! Casting a glance to the front of the scenes, we find a man of Old English (or Old Boston) stature. Seated at his stately desk with a “Typewriter on My Knee,’’ (with apologies to Stephen Fos ter), and a secretary on the other, he gives commands equal to those given from Roosevelt on his don key. He is somewhat smarter than the pressman, “Dead” Wright, for he can eat peanuts and talk at the same time. However, he sends our paper to press with his pants. After all he’s one of the finest fellows we ever met. He some times answers to the name of • Robert Powell Williams. All students and clubs are urged to pay their bills to the Laurel at the earliest possible date so that all of the yearbooks may be distributed at the same time.
