Sports Serenade
By Bruce Hudson
I
Well, here it is fall again,
folks, and fall brings brisk,
cold weather, school, and, last
but not least,—football!
Mr. Jim Cowan—"Footsie"
when off duty—has been added
to the athletic department this
year to assist Coach Roberts.
Coach Cowan was an all-round
athlete in high school at Apex,
North Carolina. From Apex he
came to Mars Hill, where he
made letters in football, bas;,
ketball, track, and tennis. After
being graduated from Mars
Hill in 1937, he enrolled at
Davidson, where he made
letters in football, basketball,
and traok. When not assisting
Coach Roberts on the athletic
field, he is putting the male
students through the paces in
the physical education classes
which he conducts.
The football team is working
out daily on the athletic field
and is expected to have a good
season, even though Coach
Roberts will not commit him
self on this point. The team
has held several inter-squad
scrimmages and is fast polish
ing the rough spots that still
remain. There ore five regulars
back from last year's squad:
Ingle at guard. Holt, tackle,
Bowen and Anderson at end,
and Carr in the backfield.
Several other veterans are also
back and are expected to play
good football this fall.
The first game was played
last Thursday night at Ashe
ville, the opposition being af
forded by the Arkansas A. &
M. eleven—the Marx Brothers
of Football. This team is known
nationally for its olownish acts
and is also widely publicized
as the most-traveled and the
most "often beaten" team in
America. When this team is on
the field, the unexpected in
variably happens, and some
of the goofiest plays ever de
vised are "employed.
Let's all give our team
whole-hearted support this fall
and be on hand at every game
to provide well-deserved cheers.
They will be out there playing
for the love of the gome and
for Mars Hill. Surely we can
cheer them.
Football is a national sport.
Here s a toast to football, the
sport of sports!!

mediately after the second
supper. Then the individual
inions go to the separate places
of meeting to present their pro
grams. The unions adjourn
promptly at 7:40 and go en
mass to the Church auditorium
for th© ©vening servic©.
A Training Union choir, to
take over the musical program
for the evening Churoh service,
is being planned by Miss
Elhson. Probably one of the
college students will direct this
choir, with Miss Ellison super
vising the work.
B.T.U. HOLDS ANNUAL
STUDY COURSE
The Baptist Training Union
study course begins on
October 6 and continues
through October 10. This
year several courses for
students not interested in the
training union program ore
being provided, the subjects
to be those of vital interest
to all American college stu
dents, it is believed. There
will be the regular training
courses in B. T. U. work
taught by faculty members,
and there will also be a
oourse in Christian Leader
ship taught by Miss Jose
phine Turner, from the North
Carolina Training Union
headquarters at Raleigh.
This study course is expected
to greatly increase interest
in the entire Training Union
program on the campus.

a tournament is being planned
for each or every two months.
These tournaments will de
termine the girls' swimming
champion, best archer, ping
pong champion, shuffleboord
champion, tennis champion,
and the horse shoe champion.
Girls, make your plans for
all of these intramural games,
and when they are announced
let's turn out in big numbers
and give Mrs. Cowan our best!

Ights at night and a meal
without the food being
rationed. She and her mother
,ive with friends at Shelby
where they will probably stay
for the duration of the war.
In spite of a blitzkrieg of C-I
girls on our campus the boys
seem to be holding up under
fire. The male division is saic,
to be advancing steadily in the
direction of the northern sector
of Mars Hill. However, it has
not been able to overcome the
"no-date-must-study" responses
of this powerful troop. Powder
and other munitions continue
to be convoyed in, strengthen
ing the resistance of this di
vision and foretelling ultimate
victory.
Veterans of the war of '40-41
hove mechanized themselves
and are now encamped on the
little circle. Generals Harrelson
and Aydlett are leading activi
ties there. Among the sur
vivors of the summer campaign
included in this division are
Corinne Griffin and Bill Stultz,
Mourine Coley and Carlton
\Vright, Jean Combs and Jimmy
Mobley, Tom Davis and Iris
Willis.
Scouting parties were sent
into the Bailey section Satur
day afternoon to test the physi
cal fitness of newly added
volunteers. General and Mrs.
Hayes were commissioned to
counteract possible espionage.
Although strict discipline was
not upheld in the ranks. Pri
vates Hodnett and McDaniels
report that the enemy was not
encountered.
Recruits or "shocked troops"
ore rapidly replaoing last
year's fatalities. Lieut. Bob
Lancaster is reported to hove
put Private Margaret Bunch in
class 1-A on his draft list. Pvt.
Joe Howard was awarded the
Harper medal for extinguished
service. Volunteer Jackie Spain-
hour hasn't taken time to brush
"Oscar" off her shoulder. Pvt.
Johannesen is using the "Eu-
ing" method in her taotics.
Speoial communique: Lieut.
John A. James narrowly
esoaped fatal injury Saturday
night as a burst of shell fire
caught him on the oollar. Some
suspect the lady in red. This
was wired from Roy's dugout
on the eastern front.

Boys’ Intramurals
The Intramural Sport setup
for the ensuing year was or
ganized on Sept. 15, when
Coach Roberts presided over
a meeting of all the boys
interested in baseball, ten
nis, track, football, and bas
ketball.
Eight baseball teams—
East Side, West Side, Brown,
Melrose, Locals, Holcomb-
Sprinkle, Gibbs-Rivermont,
and Outlcrws—were formed.
Individual team managers
(and the general manager
of equipment) have not been
chosen yet.
A great deal of interest
has been shown in the
elimination tennis tourna
ment which is to begin at
once. About thirty-one men
have already signed up.
An intramural track meet,
to be held on an individual
basis, will get under way
earl-ir in October, while the
teams already chosen in
baseball will participate in
tag football and basketball
later on. Announoement will
be made at the beginning
of the second semester about
further intramural sports.

Dear Honey and Brownie:
I have met a cute girl up
lere at school, but I don't
seem to be making much
progress with her—what'll I
do?? I'll just die if I can't win

Desperate,

Dear Charlie:
Get "special permission" and
help her with her lessons; save
her a chair in the dining hall;
or take her to the (free) movie.
As a last resort, send for a
five-pound box of Schrafft's
candy, two dozen sweetheart
OSes, and love notes between
classes. She will catch on, or

Meet The
Freshmen
Vance Lassiter—C-I:
Vance Lassiter, "Lil Abner,"
comes to Mors Hill as a
gift from Richmond, Virginia.
Vance attended summer school
here; so he is not exactly a
simon-pure C-I. He is taking
an engineering course with
high hopes of becoming an
architect. When asked his fa
vorite hobby, Vance replied,
"Judy Garland."
Eleanor Israel:
Her summer residence is
Sandler, North Carolina, but
she lives now with Jeanne Mc
Cain in 116 Edna Moore. In
high school she was very
active in dramatics, was a staff
member of the paper, and was
an honor graduate. She is
known by some as "that girl
with the sweet face."
Mickey Palmer:
Mildred Louise Palmer, better
known as "Mickey", is a cute
brunette from Greensboro. She
is taking the general business
course. She rooms in 309 Edna
Moore with Judy Covington.
Incidentally, she received a
most delicious chocolate cake
ast week, but it's all gone now!
Emily Jeones:
Emily rooms in 313 Spilmon
with Jeonie Sloan, and she is
taking the course in general
business. In high sohool she
was very active in dramatics.
She was named the "best
actress" in her district. You can
just look at that peach com
plexion of hers and tell where
she is from—Fort Valley, Geor
gia!
