Retreat To Be Held At Mars Hill The old and new B.S.U. Councils of Mars Hill college will hold their Pre-retreat Retreat on Sunday, April 16. This will be a period of local instruction at which time each new member taking his office. These discussions will be of practical help concern ing the duties of the Council. The annual Western Spring Retreat, which is usually held in Ridgecrest, North Caro lina, is scheduled to be held this year at Mars Hill. It will begin on April 21 at 7:30 p. m. and continue till Sun day after the morning church service. At this time repre sentatives from nine colleges other than Mars Hill will be the guests here. They are as follows: Bowman Grey, Bap tist Hospital School of Nurs ing, Lenoir Rhyne, Catawba, Queens College, Wingate, Gardner Webb, Brevard, W. C. T. C. The Mars Hill Council lembers will be excused from classes to attend the Confer ences. These conferences will be held by groups of the of ficers from the Councils of different colleges. Mr. Dick Howerton will preside over the Retreat. Tonight’s Program Tonight’s movie is “Bomba- dier,” a picture full of ex citement and thrills for everyone. The ever popular Pat O’Brien and the ever lovely Ann Sheridan is starring. When we asked Mr. String- field if there were any other actors in it, he said, “That’s a boy and a girl. What more do you want?’’ He also said that he hoped the machines would be in good working conditions. We don’t mind a few breaks. It gives us a chance to see who’s with whom and to catch up on campus news bits. We try to make the best of every situation in which we find ourselves. Dr. Blackwell To Attend College Conference Dr. Blackwell will be the Mars Hill representative at the Church Related College Conference which will meet at the 0. Henry Hotel, Greensboro, N. C. Ned Austin breezed into Mars Hill last week for his second visit of the year. He has been “playing” around Appalachian State Teachers College during the past six months, but he wants to get back to the “Hill” for serious work. Gwendola Pierce and Ruby Thompson sp>ent part of their spring holidays at their Alma Mater. They are making ac- creditable records at Wom an’s College this year. Pvt. Frank Huffman came onto the campus last Wednes day wearing a ribbon for a year’s good conduct in the army. He is a student in the Army Air Corps Administra tion School, Tinker Field, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Jones twins, looking as much alike as ever—ex cept more so—since they are in uniforms, spent several days visiting their “Eu” brothers and seeing the cam pus in general. Debate Teams Win From Senior Colleges Seven Slates Send Representatives Eight student representa tives brilliantly upheld Mars Hill’s already firmly estab lished Grand Eastern foren sic record. This year the Grand Eastern Forensic Tournament was held in Charlotte on April 6-7-8 under the sponsorship of Winthrop College of Rock Hill, S. C. Mars Hill brought back more than one-third of the Grand Eastern Cham pionships, winning eight of the twenty-one that were awarded. Mars Hill, one of two junior colleges participating, won these championships from a group made up large ly of representatives from senior colleges and universi ties. The eight Mars Hill con testants were Winifred Hollo- well, Lillian Miller, Florence Gordon, Nina Guard, Harold Spangler, Charles Taylor, Carl Westmoreland, and Earl Vaughan. The eight Grand Eastern Championships won were these: Grand Champion After Dinner Speaker for Girls: Florence Gordon. Grand Champion After Dinnre Speaker for Boys: Charles Taylor. Grand Champion in Decla mation for Girls: Florence Gordon. Grand Champion in Dec lamation for Boys: Harold Spangler. Grand Champion in Ex tempore for Girls: Nina Guard. Grand Champion in Re sponse to Occasion for Girls: Florence Gordon. Grand Champion in Ora tory for Girls: Florence Gor don. Champion Girl Debaters: Nina Guard and Lillian Miller In addition to winning the championships in these di visions, Mars Hill con testants won a number of first places in various contest rounds, entitling the winner to participation in the finals.
