May 1, 1947. THE HILLTOP, MARS HILL COLLEGE, MARS HILL, NORTH CAROLINA. Page 3. Lions Whip Hiawassee; Invade Milligan Friday Hillians Top Asheville By Charlie Wilfong “Richard Finally Opened The Door” SO The Sports Shop is now ready to give you the latest tips and tops in the sporting news. With the typewriter in good working order and material piled high, let’s take a look inside this exciting world called “sports.” Big Plans Are In The Making for the new arrival of Coach and Mrs. Ramsey. “Gary” is really starting off his sports career with a bang, as he already has in his possession an engraved baseball bat and a handsome pigskin. That’s not bad for a fella’ only 11 days old! While his proud papa’s red hair, little “Gary” has been tabbed to be quite a sports figure in the years to come. So here’s the way The Spors Shop sends congratulations: To *‘Gary” Ramsey Here’s to our future fullback. The pride and joy of Red. In you we place our hopes and dreams To keep Mars Hill ahead. Your Dad will be a great help to you As you grow in leaps and bounds. And the day will soon be coming When you*lI lead the Lions on the ole* home s^rounds. We U be there to watch you And you run and kick and pass, And we’ll all feel mighty sure That Mars Hill will never be surpassed. So keep the dust a’ flyin’ As you breeze around the end. And eta your spinich daily ! To keep yourself in trim. Interesting Sidelights . . . Owen Tilson has been displajdng sparkling array of white athletic socks since the close of the gridiron season. He was our football manager, ya ’know. My! What a col lection he has . . . All Milligan was agog when Mr. Mercurj' (Jack Sanderford, that is) hurled the javelin 176.8 feet ,in the opening track meet for the Lions. Mr. M. broke two records with the toss and truly amazed those who were present. One Tennessee moun taineer remarked to this reporter, “Gorsh! I never thought that thar thing would go that fer.” . . . McConnell gym was the site for an other “M” Club initiation the other evening. Ed Stokes, Sleepy Cole, and a few others are still a bit dazed from the active hours in the Sym and from taking the “long way home.” . . . Papa D’s tennis team has really been swishing the ovals across in fine style. Bre- vard ran into a peck of trouble here Monday when the tennis titans scored their second straight clean sweep, winning every set. Pat Anderson and Art Wood are still together, even on the tennis ^ourts . . . Speaking of trouble. Coach “Pop” Lance and his boys slapped Brevard around on the diamond during their two fold visit nere Monday. It reminds us of what happened over on the football ^ield a few months ago. Remember? . . . Every time Frost, Reynolds, biance, or “Rock” visit the Sports Shop we always get back to that tournament in Hendersonville. The boys all agree that the presence student body at those two games brought forth the real Mars “ill Spirit that spelled victory. More of such victories are in the ■' *^uking if history will repeat itself in regard to the attendance of students at future outrof-town sports contests ... In one of the Controversies, that occurred during the recent Brevard baseball game, '^op” Lance, in explaining his’viewpoint, quoted the discussed rule ^ord for word to the opposing coach. This is just one of the many examples that verify the complete knowledge that our diamond coach possesses. old thiw— taught worked Club- of the of the Issionary )mments since earn® thou- tenvarde the boys racticaliy ) ate .fte^ the ra nd donci 1 in fui*' Qvili' '’oryone is beginning to get Ibe a new tennis courts ich are being built behind the , . fulldormitories on Edna Moore ' ^ lo't b these courts will ■ j sih?' ^ completed in time for use Is, and IS semester, they will be access- le to all female Mars Hill Gol- and Iannis lovers when the fall ssion opens next semester. North Carolina Nolan Tosses Lance Nine To 13-4 Victory Coach Harvey N. “Pop” Lance’s rejuvenated and high-riding Moun tain Lions, back in the wdn col umn with a douible-barreled tri umph over Hiwassee, will resume the baseball wars on Friday, May 3, when they journey to Milligan for their seventh game of the sea son and third contest away from home grounds. Tranquil Bill Stapleton, Mars Hill’s ace portsider, is expected to make his third appearance on the mound for the locals. The lanky left-hander will deliver his slants to Norman Lytton, undisputed Hillian catcher, who took over full-time duties with the resigna tion of Glenn Clanton. Clanton, a hangover catcher and one of last year’s most celebrated Lions’ baseballers, bid Mars Hill College baseball “farewell” last week, ex plaining that his withdrawal was necessary “in order to devote more of his time to studies.” Mars Hill spirits are high after the clean sweep of a two-game series with Hiwassee here on Monday and Tuesday, April 28-29, which saw Coach “Pop” Lance’s baseballers hand the Tennessee visitors a woodshed thrashing, 13-4, in the opener; and, Earl Fergurson’s power-packed bat pro vide the margin of victory in the overtime finals, 10-9. The Lions won the second game in the tenth inning when Abie Norman’s hard- hit grounder ricocheted off the Hiwassee pitcher’s glove, allowing Chick Martin to race in from third and with the tell-tale run. Big Jim Nolan, speedball right hander, tossed the route in the opening contest to hang up his second win in as many starts. D. T. Carowan, Lance’s darkhors© right-hander, found his inexperi enced pitching effective enough to award him his first mound success of the year. 19 Doctors 12 Lawyers 4 Presidents Of local corporations, and many other prominent men, noted for their discriminat ing judgment, - consistently employ O.
