Coaches Ramsey and Both Edwards say the boys are looking good for the game with the Bulldogs. We shall see some Ex-Lions with the Bulldogs this afternoon. Those players will be: Cecil Roberts, full back; J. C. Merrill, back; Jack Stewart, tailback; and Eddie Har rell, back. The cheerleaders and band did a fine job last Saturday in the Pembroke-Lions game. About 1,500 persons witnessed the game. Everyone was having a good time. Did you see how “still” “Red” Ramsey and Bob Edwards were out there on the bench? We thought they were giving the Indians a demonstration in “war dancing.” From where we sat, “all up and down the lines,” we saw the Lions make several fine plays. “Sleepy” Cole said: “Just wait ’til my ankle gets well, I’ll show ’em.” Sanderford carried the ball for 20 yards in the game with Pembroke, which looked very good. Dillard, Mclver, Brinkley, “Red” Fleming, and Rumbough were giving the Lions great aid in the game with Pembroke. Be sure to see the Lions and the Biltmore College Bulldogs in tbe homecoming game. They will need your backing. We’ve just got to beat ’em. We will be back in the next issue to give you more “sides” about the Lions. Weather Man Aids Tennis Good weather has aided tennis practice for the last few days. We are still handicapped by having only two courts in shape to prac tice on. If our eight courts were in good condition, they would be used every afternoon. Mr. Prince, the coach, told the boys the first day, “I do not pick the team. You pick the team and you by your performance decide which position you will play.” Rankings as of October 4th are Bob Morgan (first), Carey Mum- ford (second), Walter Morphis (third), George Furches (fourth). Hunter Phillips (fifth), and How ard Knight (sixth). Competition for the top places on the team is so'keen that any one of the above men is a possibility for first position. We quote the coach, “The first position may be held by any one of you, and it will be whichever of you is in the best shape physically and who im proves most.” In practice at the present, the emphasis is on double play. Pair ings in doubles seem almost e- finite to be Morgan and Mumford; Morphis and Furches; Phillips and Knight. The Mars Hill Lions bounced back here last Saturday after noon, striking in the first, third, and fourth periods to gain a 46-0 rout over the Pembroke Indians. All the Lions saw action in the game. Martin Cavanaugh ran for three touchdowns in the free- scoring affair, which saw the Lions count three times in the initial period. Cavanaugh’s first score came on a 10 yard dash around the end in the opening minutes of the game. A nice long pass from Frank Yandall to Char lie Wilfong netted 30 yards and the second tally of one ball game. William Webster ended the first period scoring with a crash thru the line for a touchdown. Yan dall received a pass from Cavan augh for the extra marker. Lions Open The second quarter opened with the Lions leading 19-0 over the Indians. Sanderford made a dash for the goal line, but was pushed out of bounds by a “wild” Indian. Dillard made a nice pass to Ca vanaugh on which they gained several yards. With only a few minutes left to play, the Indians fought back hard and stopped the Lions in the last of the second quarter. The half ended with the Lions out in front 19-0. Mclver started the second half of the game with a nice kick for 50 yards. Webster passed to Wil fong for a gain of 9 yards. Ca vanaugh scored again in the open ing minutes of the third quarter with a beautiful 12-yard dash across the goal line. An extra marker was made on a nice play by Sanderford. The Indians fought back hard, but the Lions held down the attack very nicely. Mars Hill was leading at the end of the third quarter, 26-0. Touchdown Pass Early in the fourth quarter, Webster threw a 20 yard pass to Bob Miller for the fifth touch down of the game. Brinkley made a nice run across the line for the extra marker. Coach “Red” Ram sey put some of his third and (Continued on Page 4) “We are having more fun in Swimming Club and Archery Club!’? More than one girl has said that to other girls Who do not belong to one of these clubs, in the hope of urging them to join. No fooling, girls, you should join one of the three clubs in action now. They are really having a good time! In Archery Club, meeting at 5:15 on Monday and Wednesday, the girls are learning correct form and methods of archery. Above all, they just love to hit that bull’s eye! (Who doesn’t?) So, girls, be eager beavers and come on down and join the Archery Club. In Swimming Club, what time Coach Hart isn’t making someone swim the length of the pool, the girls just enjoy splashing through the water. Oh, yes, if you ar© wondering about the temperature on cold days, just quit worrying this minute, because the water in the pool is always heated. Come on in. The water is really fine! And Tennis! Well, the best thing about this sport is practicing or just playing whenever you have a chance if Coach Hart doesn’t try to monopolize the court. Be good sports, girls. See the sports club chairmen. Join a club and develop your school, for it’s really worth your trying. We’ll be looking for you!
