Page Throe MHC Lions Roar Over Bulldogs 13-6 A fighting Mars Hill eleven won their second football game of the ^season Saturday, October 16, when they defeated the Gardner-Webb -Bulldogs, 13-6, on the Mars Hill gridiron. Whitehead returned the kick-off to the Mars Hill 30. Unable to gain In two plays, Rumbough kicked to the Gardner-Webb 38. From this point the Bulldogs Tacked up three first downs to l^he Mars Hill 20-yard line. When Wear, G. W. fullback, attempted •a lateral to Gantt, right half back, Baskett, Lion end, broke through ■and intercepted the lateral and ran 80 yards for the first Mars Hill score. Baskett’s attempt for the extra point from placement was blocked, and the Lions lead •6-0. Not to be denied, the fighting •Gardner-Webb team came back up field from their own 38 to score in three plays with Gantt going ■52 yards to score. The try for •extra point was wide. Late in the second quarter Uardner-Webb drove to a first ■down on the Mars Hill 16, but the Lions put up fierce resistance and took over on their own 15-yard line. Rumbough kicked out to his •own 35. From this point the Bull dogs marched to the 20 where Walker, M.A. center, intercepted ■a forward pass and brought the ball back to his 33. Rumbough was forced to kick and Gardner- Webb took over on their own 46 ■as the half ended. Lions Break Tie Mars Hill kicked off to start the ■second half; Baskett and Hipp tackled Ardnt, G.W. left half, on his own 10. The Bulldogs kicked, and the Lions took over on the 60- y^ard line. Compton came in for Sanders at right end, and on the next play took a pass from Myer on the G.W. 6 and was pushed out of bounds on the 2. After two ■attempts Myer cracked over for Mars Hill’s second T.D. Baskett kicked the extra point and the Lions led 13-6. Late in the third quarter the Bulldogs started a march from their own 32 that carried to the Lion’s 30 as the quarter ended. To start the final period Whit tington carried for a first down •on the M.H.C. 20. Gantt passed to Humphrey on the Mars Hill for another first down. Here the Lions put up a desperate goal-line stand, and took over on their 1 ^t line after four plunges by the Bulldogs. Rumbough kicked ■out to the Mars Hill 31. Basket, OSS, and Hipp threw Whitting- on for an eight-yard loss on his iTSt try from scrimmage. On the ■second down Sanders threw Walk- •or, G.W. quarterback, for a ten- .yard loss. A penalty gave the Bull dogs a first down on the 30. After our attempts the Lions took over their own 22. Sponsors Given Recognition The Mars Hill-Gardner-Webb football game was highlighted by the appearance of the Mars Hill College sponsors. The four spon sors were chosen by the various athletic organizations. During the half the girls were given special recognition and presented with beautiful corsages of yellow chry santhemums and roses. The football team’s sponsor was Jeanette Jones, escorted by Lee Rhodes. Serobia Ware was sponsor for the Monogram Club and was escorted by Joe Miller. The Wom en’s Athletic Organization chose for their sponsor “Pug” Holbrook, who was escorted by Buddy Ander son. Doris Ann Carter was spon sor for the band and had as her escort William Frazier. North Carolina Lions Bow to Hiwassee Giants The fighting Mars Hill Lions lost their second straight game to a heavier Hiwassee eleven Satur day afternoon, October 9, on the Mars Hill gridiron by the score of 20-0. The / Lions kicked off to start the game, and the Giants moved down the field to the Lion’s 17- yard line. At this point Curling, end, covered a fumble for the Lions, which ended Hiwassee’s drive. Neither team was able to score in the first quarter. Soon after the second quarter started, Steele passed to Gentry for the first score. Herron kicked the extra point, and Hiwassee led 7-0. The two teams battled on even terms until the half ended with neither team scoring. Track Team Mixes With Bobcats The Mars Hill cross country track team journeyed to Banner Elk for its first meet with the Lees - McRae Bobcats, Thursday, October 14. The Bobcats had eight men entered in the two-mile race, and the Lions entered five men. The Lees-McRae runners took the first five places in the finish; Mars Hill took the next five places with Clarke, Horton, Singleton, Snyder, and McElrath finishing in that order. Two To One | 4* Two Courteous Barbers To ^ Serve You ? Glasses Hold Pep Rally The C-I and C-II classes held a competitive pep meeting Friday night. Each class decorated sec tions of the amphitheater in their respective class colors. The C-I class cheerleaders in green and white led the spirited Freshmen. The “Forty-Niners” in maroon and gold, led the C-IIs in their songs and yells. Both classes showed a great deal of enthusiasm and class spirit. After a hard de cision, the judges awarded the top honors to the C-I class. The con test was regarded as a big success and it is hoped that this event will become an annual affair. Following the contest, a short pep rally was held by the school cheerleaders in preparation for the Mars Hill-Gardner-Webb foot ball game. Later an attempt ed pass from Myer to Sanders was intercepted by Shepherd on the 10. From this point the Giants went on to score their third touch down. The try for the extra point was blocked by Walker, and the Lions trailed 20-0. Mars Hill’s only real threat came in the final period when Walker intercepted a pass on his own 45 and returned it to the Hiwassee 10. The Lions moved the ball to the 1-yard line, but Hi wassee took over and began moving up the field as the game ended.
