There are three ping pong tables equipped with new balls, nets, and paddles. There are also a couple of other table games and plenty of room to stand around and talk and watch the games. C. t MHC Lions Make Progress as Gage Season Advances The Mars Hill Mountain Lions, holding victories over Burnsville, American Legion, North Green ville, Elizabethton Commerce and the Tusculum five, and having been defeated only by Lees- McRae in an overtime battle, made their first appearance of 1949 and their first engagement away from home this season, against Hiwassee, Friday night, Jan. 7. The Lions were also sched uled for a return game with Tusculum Saturday night, Jan. 8. In games prior to the Christmas holidays, the Lions scored 320 points to 196 for their opponents. Brevard Brown, sharp shooting forward, has hooped 57 points for a 11.4 point per game average. Next in line are Bill High with a 10.4 average, and John Shaver with a 10 point average. Buddy Anderson has been outstanding on defense. The Lions suffered their first injury when Jim Troxler, lanky forward, suffered a broken thumb in the game with North Green ville. ASHEVILLE north CAROLINA With the beginning of the new year, several new sports have been started for the girls. The Basketball club began im mediately after the holidays. Its meetings are held every Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 until 6:00. A large member ship is desired for this club so that there will be enough girls to sched ule games between the dorms. The Hiking Club had its first meeting last Friday afternoon. Hikes are being scheduled for each Friday afternoon, after se mester holidays, beginning at 4:30 from the Gym. Another new club is also in the process of being organized. The Recreational club will begin also after the holidays. It will offer to its members ping-pong and shuffleboard. The old year brought to a close the Swimming club. Its meet, held before Christmas holidays, gave a three point victory to the C-I swimmers. The meet was judged by the members of the faculty who named the final score 19-16. Three “All-Around Best Swim mers’’ were selected by the two team captains and the chairman of the club. The girls named were Lorraine Bennett, Faye Cochran, and Robie Ware. These girls were selected for their speed, form, style, and general ability. The Archery club has also se lected its top members. The girls holding the high scores, when the season ended, were Margaret Howell, Florrie Ann Lawton, and Pat Murphy. All of these girls that received top honors in their clubs were in vited to join the M-Blem club which held its regular monthly meeting at 7:30 Monday night. In the second game the Brown team defeated the Preachers 55 to 19. On Thursday, Jan. 6, a major upset occurred when the C-II’s knocked the town team from the undefeated ranks with a 34 to 33 victory. In the second game the Phis, who suffered their final de feat at the hands of the Town team prior to the holidays, de feated a scrappy C-I team 32 to 20. On Friday, Jan. 7, the Eu thalians defeated a fighting Brown team 26 to 16, and in the second game the Town team handed Mel rose a 43 to 13 defeat. In the games through Thursday, Jan."6, Clyde Walker, Town team forward, is leading the point-mak ers with 61 points. Second is Cecil Sloan with 40 points, third.
