C. ^iddleiiiount Plower Shop Asheville N ® «• t h C 1 Mars Hill Lions Roar Over Asheville-Biltmore Bulldogs A fighting Mars Hill College five* scored a thrilling 58-53 victory over the Asheville-Biltmore Bulldogs, Friday, January 28. in the City Auditorium in Asheville. From the time that the official threw up the ball for the tip-off, the two teams played hard, scrappy basketball, with Mars Hill holding the lead most of the way. The two teams went for two minutes and fifty seconds before either team broke into the scoring column. High, Mars Hill center, got the scoring underway when he sank a free throw to put the Lions in the lead. After High scored, the Lions put up a defense which was too tight for the Bulldogs to break through and get an open shot at the basket. However, it was not long before the first period ended that the Bulldogs put on a rally and surged ahead to hold a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. As the second quarter got underway. Mars Hill, led by High, staged a rally which put them ahead for the rest of the contest. When the first half came to an end. Mars Hill was leading by the score of 26-18. Mars Hill started the scoring in the second half also. Steele, re placing High at center, tipped the ball to Anderson who threw to Shaver just over the mid-court line in the left front court. Shaver sank a goal from there with a perfect shot. Although the Lions held an eight point lead at half time, the Bulldogs cut the lead to five points by the time the third quarter ended. The Lions led 39-34 as the final period got started. The Bulldogs, fighting desperately to come back, started a rally with Ru- deen and Brinkley leading the way. Midway in the final quarter the Asheville Quint tied the score at 41 all with six minutes left to on a pass from Anderson that hit from the left back court. Steele took the ball off of the backboard for the Lions after Rudeen at tempted a set shot. Brown, drib bling fast down court, faked Ru deen out of position and hit the basket to send the Lions into the lead at 49-47. Brinkley, fouled by Steele, hit two more free throws to tie the game at 49 all. The score remained tied, when Brown and Rudeen each hit for their re spective teams. With the score standing at 51 all, Steele attempt ed a hook shot from the foul circle, and Brinkley fouled him. Steele hit both shots to send the Lions ahead with a 53-51 lead. Brown hit again from the left side of the court. It was at this point, with one minute left to play, that the Lions sewed up the victory. The Bulldogs took the ball out of bounds under the basket after Brown scored, but Anderson, who played an outstand ing game on defense during the entire contest, stole the ball from Rudeen and hit on a set shot. This put the Lions ahead by the score of 57-51. Rudeen took the ball from Thompson on a pass and hit from mid-court. Rudeen fouled Brown, and Brown hit his free throw to give the Lions a 58-53 lead with four seconds left to play. The entire Mars Hill squad played outstanding ball during the contest. Little Brevard Brown was play in the game. It was at this the outstanding player on offense point that Brevard Brown, little as he sank a total of 21 points in Mars Hill forward, got hot. Brown, who scored only six counters in the first half, sterted hitting from the left hand back court After Rudeen tied the score with a long shot. Brown took a pass from Mc- Elrath and hit to send the Lions back into the lead. Brinkley tied the score for Biltmore with a jump shot from the foul circle. Just as before. Brown hit again from the left back court. Rudeen then hit from mid-court with a set shot, and the score stood at 45 all. High, who was in the game at center for Steele, fouled Brinkley in the act of shooting, and Brinkley hit both free throws. Asheville took the lead for the first time since the end of the first quarter. However, little Brevard Brown took the ball 1. Bob Steele, giant center for the Lions, played wonderful ball on defense as he controlled the backboards. Not only was he outstanding on defense, but he hit a total of 10 points during the game. Anderson, Mars Hill cap tain, and McElrath were very ef fective on defense and while under pressure along with Bennett. North CareliBa Belmont-Abbey Defeats Mars Hill Lions The Belmont Abbey Quint de feated the Mars Hill Lions by the score of 46-44 in a thrilling bas ketball game, Wednesday night, February 2, on the Belmont Abbey court. Both teams battled on almost equal terms during the entire game, but Belmont Abbey man aged to rally in the last minute of the game to win. When the first half ended the Lions and Belmont Abbey were tied up in a 24 all deadlock. Soon after the final half got underway, the Mars Hill team pulled out in front with a slim lead. However, the Belmont Quint rallied and tied the score again. Mars Hill, who led most of the contest went into the final two minutes of the contest with a two point advantage, but Cencula tied up the game as he hit on a perfect shot. As the final seconds ticked off with game tied at 44 all, Leftwich, Belmont Abbey for ward, hit on a punch shot which proved to be the winning goal. Bob Steele, Mars Hill center, played outstanding ball on defense and also led the Lions in the scor ing by sinking a total of 13 points. He was closely followed by Brown and Bennett with 11 tallies each. Leftwich and Jones led the offen sive attack of Belmont Abbey by scoring 13 and 11 points respec tively. PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS Mars Hill Quint Edged 3 Points By Lees-McRae The Mars Hill Lions bowed to a fighting Lees-McRae Quint, Tuesday night, February 1, on the Lees-McRae basketball court, by the score of 40-37. The Lees-McRae Quint, who de feated the Lions 44-39 in their first contest of the year, put on a good fight in the last minutes of the game to gain their second vic tory of the season over the Mars Hill five. The game was very tight during the entire contest, but the Lions were never able to put on a rally capable of overcoming the lead which the Lees McRae team held. The Lions, however, led the entire first half, being sparked by forward Brevard Brown, who sank 10 points. As the second half got under way, Jennings, Lees-McRae guard, started hitting from all positions on the court, sinking a total of 10 points in leading a rally by Lees- McRae. Before the third period ended the Lions were trailing by the score of 31-27. They never regained the lead. Jennings was the high scorer for the game with a total of eight field goals and one free throw for a total of 17 points. Brown led the Lions on offense by sinking 14 tallies.
